강정일당을 통해 본 가난과 행복
Poverty and Happiness Through GangJeongildang
본 논문은 한국의 여성 성리학자 강정일당(姜靜一堂, 1772–1832)의 삶과 철학을 분석하여 물질만능사회에서 행복의 의미를 재고하는 것을 목표로 한다.
가난하면서도 행복할 수 있을까? 물질이 최고가치로 여겨질수록 빈부격차와 소유에 대한 집착은 심화되며 상대적 박탈감 등 개인의 삶을 저하시킬뿐 아니라 다양한 사회적 문제를 야기하는 주요 원인으로 작용한다. 인간의 행복과 직결된 빈곤 문제는 시대와 사회를 불문하고 중요하게 다뤄진 주제이다. 유가에서는 빈곤 문제를 해결하기 위해 전통적으로 자기만족과 가족 및 공동체의 역할을 강조하였다.
강정일당은 신분의 한계와 경제적 어려움 속에서도 학문을 놓지 않았고, 특히 ‘리(理)’의 가치를 중시하고 ‘경(敬)’을 통해 예를 실천하였다. 배움을 통한 앎과 실천의 일치는 검약과 안빈낙도의 태도로 나타나 빈곤한 삶 속에서도 자기 만족감을 누릴 수 있었다. 이는 빈곤에 대한 새로운 관점을 검토할 필요성을 제기한다.
빈곤에 대한 유가적 입장에서 강정일당의 학문적 기반을 살펴보고, 진정한 배움이 열악한 환경에서 행복을 가져온 강정일당의 철학을 이해하였다. 물질 만능주의 시대에 상대적 빈곤을 극복하는 시사점을 제공하였다.
This paper aims to reassess the meaning of happiness in a materialistic society by analyzing the life and philosophy of GangJeongildang (姜靜一堂, 1772–1832), a female Neo-Confucian scholar from Korea.
Is it possible to be happy while living in poverty? As material wealth becomes the highest value, the gap between the rich and the poor widens, and the obsession with possession intensifies. This not only degrades individual lives through feelings of relative deprivation but also causes various social issues. The issue of poverty, which is directly linked to human happiness, has been a significant topic across different eras and societies. Traditionally, Confucianism has emphasized self-satisfaction and the roles of family and community in addressing poverty.
Despite her social status and economic hardships, GangJeongildang never abandoned her studies and maintained a sense of self-satisfaction through frugality and the attitude of ‘finding peace and joy in simplicity (anpinledao 安貧樂道)’. She particularly valued the principle of ‘li (理)’ and practiced ‘reverence (jing 敬)’ in her life. This reflects the unity of knowledge and practice through learning, suggesting a need to re-examine poverty from a new perspective.
By reviewing the Confucian stance on poverty, this study explores the academic foundation of GangJeongildang and examines whether true learning can bring happiness in adverse conditions. It provides insights into overcoming relative poverty in a materialistic society.
