The Political Philosophical Significance of Nussbaum’s Concept of ‘Political Love’: Focusing on Differences from Arendt and Rawls

This paper aims to examine the concept of ‘political love’, the core theme of Nussbaum’s Political Emotions, and to explore its political philosophical significance. First, it compares Nussbaum’s views on political emotions with those of Arendt and Rawls to more clearly confirm her perspective. Arendt defines love as ‘a private, worldless, and anti-political emotion’. According to Arendt, love cannot belong to the public realm and is an emotion that must be replaced by respect and friendship among citizens. In contrast, Nussbaum views love as a public and political emotion. For example, pride and affection for one’s region, ethnicity, or nation are emotions that actually influence politics in the real world, and it is difficult to confine all of these to the private realm. Nussbaum’s concept of political love encompasses these types of emotions that are not explained within Arendt’s perspective. On the other hand, this paper will examine the theme running through Political Emotions, namely, Nussbaum’s critical review of Rawls’ ‘sense of justice’. Nussbaum views positively the fact that Rawls clearly recognizes the importance of the psychological foundation supporting a just society. However, Rawls’ sense of justice falls short in compelling people to restrain their selfish tendencies and dedicate themselves to the stable maintenance of social institutions. Nussbaum focuses on ‘love’ as an emotion to complement this “principle-dependent” and lukewarm sense of justice. While accepting Rawls’ theory of justice and the concept of political liberalism, Nussbaum seeks to critically overcome their limitations, which is succinctly summarized by the realization that “love matters for justice”. Drawing on the ideas of Locke and Kant regarding individual freedom and autonomy, and the ideas of Rousseau and Comte regarding social cohesion, Nussbaum try to resolve problems of both sides through balanced reflection. This attempt by Nussbaum holds clear significance as an explanation of the liberal perspective on political love. Furthermore, it can serve as very timely and beneficial advice for safeguarding the democratic order in a modern society where disgust and hatred are intensifying.
