Substantial Independence and the Problem of Essential Parts
This paper examines the viability of the essentialist approach to existence-dependence and substantial independence, according to which both are to be understood in terms of essence. If substances are understood as entities that do not existence-depend on anything else, then the possibility of substances that have their parts essentially poses a potential threat to the essentialist approach. I call this “the problem of essential parts.” By elaborating on the concept of essence in detail, this paper distinguishes two versions of the essentialist approach—Fine’s view and Lowe’s view—and examines the prospects of each. Fine holds that x existentially depends on y when some essential truth about x involves y, whereas Lowe holds that existential dependence obtains only when an essential truth that fixes the identity of x involves y. The paper argues that the problem of essential parts is fatal to Fine’s view, but does not pose as serious a threat to Lowe’s view.
