Genius and Affect in Kant’s Aesthetics: The Purposiveness of Aesthetic Judgment in Relation to Ideas
This paper examines the issue of genius and affect in Kant’s aesthetics, focusing on the purposiveness of aesthetic judgment in relation to ideas. Kant argues that the purposive ground of beauty and the sublime lies in aesthetic sensitivity toward moral feeling. Within the human mind, a moral law is already given as a vocation of reason, the feeling toward this moral law can be perceived in an aesthetic mode, and the aesthetically perceived feeling of pleasure can be communicated to others. From this perspective, Kant reveals how the purposiveness of beauty and the sublime can be realized in reality through genius and affect. Genius is the innate talent for creating aesthetic art. When the imagination of a genius expands a representation beyond the limits of experience, that representation does not merely remain within the cognition of the understanding but is exhibited as an aesthetic idea corresponding to an idea of reason. The art of genius is purposive because a work of art is regarded as implying morality as if it were a product of nature, and because morality is considered to be perceptible through works of art. Meanwhile, sublime affect is an innate disposition of the mind that appears when humans break free from sensible impulses and combine with moral ideas. Kant refers to enthusiasm united with the Idea of the good, apatheia that is not swayed by external stimuli and adheres to principles, and a strong will that does not succumb to any threat as sublime affects that appear when human beings break free from sensible nature and follow their supersensible nature. Because the moral law is given a priori in the human mind, the union of affect and an Idea enables the human being to transcend the limits of sensibility and expand toward the supersensible. The significance of Kant’s aesthetics lies in showing through genius how far human consciousness can reach, and in awakening through affect that humans are beings with infinite possibilities to transcend their own limitations.
