A Relational-Philosophical Study on the Organic Practice System through the Master : Disciple Relationship in Patriarchal Chan and Ganhwa Seon
This study aims to compare and analyze the teacher–disciple relationships in two major traditions of East Asian Seon (Zen) Buddhism—Patriarchal Seon (祖師禪) and Ganhwa Seon (看話禪)—and to reconstruct an organic system of practice that integrates their respective strengths from a relational-philosophical perspective. Patriarchal Seon, grounded in the principles of “mind-to-mind transmission” (心印傳心) and “dynamic functioning of great capacity” (大機大用), establishes a mode of practice in which teacher and disciple directly embody truth through existential resonance. In contrast, Ganhwa Seon, since the Song dynasty, systematizes practice through hwadu (話頭, critical phrase) investigation and the institution of certification (inka), thereby securing both the continuity of practice and the stability of the monastic community through the documentation of Dharma lineage. Rather than framing these two traditions as oppositional, this study reinterprets them as complementary by examining their distinctive modes of practice and structures of teacher–disciple relationships. Specifically, it explores the possibility of integrating the immediacy and non-mediated experiential dimension of Patriarchal Seon with the structured guidance and verification system of Ganhwa Seon, thereby envisioning a model that sustains both the vitality and continuity of practice. In this context, the teacher–disciple relationship is redefined not merely as a hierarchical structure of instruction and transmission, but as a relational praxis in which teacher and disciple co-realize and enact truth. The proposed “organic system of practice through the teacher–disciple relationship of Patriarchal and Ganhwa Seon” can thus be understood as a dynamic structure in which immediacy and institutional form are held in productive tension. In conclusion, this study reexamines the teacher–disciple relationship in Seon Buddhism through a relational-philosophical framework and presents a theoretical foundation for reconstructing traditional modes of practice in contemporary contexts. Furthermore, it suggests that this model may be extended to practical applications in meditation education, spiritual guidance, and communal healing practices.
