Rethinking Axel Honneth’s Normative Reconstruction ‒ Beyond Teleological Historicism ‒
악셀 호네트의 규범적 재구성 재검토 ‒ 목적론적 역사주의를 넘어서 ‒

In Freedom’s Right, Axel Honneth seeks to provide an alternative to dominant liberal theories of justice by grounding his normative framework in immanent ethical ideals. He attempts this through the methodology of normative reconstruction, which aims to identify and articulate the moral grammar implicit in the institutions and practices of modern society. However, as several critics have noted, this methodology may struggle to retain its critical force so long as it tends towards a teleological reading of historical moral development. Namely, if historical development is treated as evidence of normative validity, immanent critique risks collapsing into retrospective justification. This article responds to such a concern by proposing a revised model of normative reconstruction through the historical perspectives of Walter Benjamin and Amy Allen. Their accounts of non-linear, plural, and open-ended historical development offer an alternative framework that avoids the pitfalls of teleological historicism, while preserving Honneth’s ambitious project to formulate a view of democratic ethical life.
