A Theological Interpretation of Sartre’s Atheism: The Ontological Relationship between Being and Consciousness in Being and Nothingness
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the possibility of a theological interpretation of Sartre’s atheism. Sartre is usually presented as an atheist who denies God, and while such an evaluation is somewhat valid, it does not mean that he does not address the question of God. On the contrary, his atheism approaches God in a different way. In Chapter 2, the author began with the fullness of being before the emergence of consciousness and discussed Sartre’s atheism. Consciousness ‘emerges’ from being, giving rise to two realms of being and consciousness, in which there is no place for God. However, his atheism ultimately leads to the question of God. Therefore, in Chapter 3, the relationship between his atheism and God is discussed. For Sartre, God is not a transcendent being but the unity of being and consciousness, which, borrowing Hegel’s term, means ‘in-itself-for-itself.’ However, in Sartre’s atheism, consciousness cannot coincide with being, and thus the unhappy consciousness of humans was discussed in Chapter 4. This unhappy consciousness arises from the failure to overcome ‘nothingness’ between being and consciousness. Therefore, although Sartre’s atheism rejects a transcendent being and leads to the question of God as the ‘in-itself-for-itself’ representing the unity of being and consciousness, these two relationships become an insoluble problem, ultimately giving his atheism its limits. However, in Chapter 5, the author discussed how Sartre’s atheism could be extended into a theological interpretation from this limitation.
