인신공격의 재개념화: 심층적 이해를 통한 비판
Reconceptualizing the Ad Hominem: Criticizing through Deep Understanding
본 연구는 인신공격을 근절해야 한다는 통념에 대한 의문에서 출발하여, 발화의 내용에만 국한하지 않고 발화자의 배경까지 포함하여 비판하는 정당한 인신공격으로서 ‘인간 지향적 비판’ 개념을 제시한다. 다만 인간 지향적 비판은 배경을 근거로 삼는다는 점에서, 상대를 모욕하거나 논쟁을 조기 종결시키려는 부당한 인신공격으로 사용될 수 있으므로, 이를 통제하기 위해 잠정성·관련성·개방성 원칙이라는 최소한의 요구 사항을 제시한다. 마지막으로 이러한 원칙들은 경합적 민주주의의 특성과 잘 부합한다는 점에서, 경합적 민주주의에서 인간 지향적 비판이 실천될 가능성이 높다고 주장한다.
This study begins by questioning the common assumption that ad hominem attacks must be eradicated. It introduces the concept of “ad hominem critique” as a form of justified ad hominem criticism that constructs critique not only in terms of what is said but also by taking into account the speaker’s background. Unlike illegitimate ad hominem attacks that aim to insult an opponent or prematurely terminate debate, ad hominem critique presupposes minimal conditions under which such criticism can be publicly justified. Yet because it appeals to background, it also carries risks of arbitrary labeling and exclusion. To control these risks, the study proposes three principles—provisionality, relevance, and openness. Finally, since these principles align well with the features of agonistic democracy, I argue that the practice of ad hominem critique is likely to be realized within an agonistic democratic framework.
