A Study on Ways to Overcome ‘Needham’s Grand Question’
This study analyzes the significance and limitations of Needham’s Grand Question and proposes strategies for overcoming the perceived burden of East Asians’ failure to create modern science. While Needham’s Question has provided a valuable opportunity for East Asians to reflect on their traditional thought, its utility is limited due to its fundamentally negative formulation (asking “why not”). Having fulfilled its historical role, and with East Asia having adopted and integrated modern science as its own, the time has come to shift our perspective on both Needham’s Question and Western science. This argument is based on three reasons: Reinforcement of Orientalism: Continued attempts to answer this question serve more to reinforce Orientalism than to provide educational value. Equivalence of Value (Early vs. Late Development): China’s pre-modern technology (早生技術, early-maturing technology) developed significantly earlier than modern science and contributed to human civilization over a long period. From the perspective of the cyclical theory of civilizations, there is no substantial difference in value between China’s early-maturing technology and the West’s late-blooming science (晩生科學, late-maturing science). Global Intellectual Asset: As Needham himself emphasized, modern science, though originating in the West, is not solely a Western asset but a ‘world intellectual asset.’ It is the result of the historical fusion and contribution of advanced technologies from East Asia and various other global regions over the classical and medieval periods. Therefore, based on the cyclical view of civilization, there is no need for East Asians to feel burdened or self-reproachful about “importing and using” modern science because it did not originate locally.
