The History of the Reception of Thomism in Korea (I): Characteristics and Challenges, with a Focus on Comparison with the East Asian Context

This paper aims to identify the characteristics and tasks of Korea’s history of Thomism reception by comparing it with that of three other East Asian countries (China, Taiwan, and Japan). The purpose of this comparative study is to evaluate Korea’s history of Thomism reception more objectively and to derive practical directions and tasks for future Thomism research in Korea. Although East Asian countries share the common ground of the Chinese character cultural sphere and the Buddhist-Confucian intellectual tradition, each has received Western medieval philosophy within its own distinct linguistic, cultural, and historical context. This comparative approach therefore enables a more relative and multidimensional understanding of Korea’s reception history. The present study is meta-analytical in character, treating as its primary sources the scholarly articles on Thomism reception history published by researchers across East Asian countries, and adopts as its principal methodology the tracing of historical developments and the comparison of key characteristics. The scope of the research is divided into two themes. This paper (Part I) addresses the first theme—namely, the initial conditions of Thomism reception across the four East Asian countries from the late sixteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the interruptions that occurred, and the moments that prompted its full-scale academic reception—and proceeds to identify the distinctive characteristics and future tasks of Korea’s history of Thomism reception in light of these findings. This study will serve as the foundation for a subsequent paper (Part II), which will compare the current state and characteristics of Thomism research in each country following the onset of its full-scale reception, and will address the tasks that lie ahead.
