The Metaphysical Reconstruction of Christian Doctrine in Schopenhauer’s Philosophy
This article examines how Schopenhauer reappropriates the fundamental doctrines of Christianity within the framework of his metaphysics of the will. To this end, it analyzes two theological controversies to which Schopenhauer explicitly refers in The World as Will and Representation: the dispute between Augustine and Pelagius, and that between Luther and Erasmus. Although Schopenhauer is generally critical of Christianity, his favorable assessment of its fundamental doctrine requires a more careful reconsideration of his understanding of Christian soteriology. According to Schopenhauer, the fundamental doctrine of Christianity consists in the denial that human free will and human works can serve as the cause of salvation. It presupposes the radical fallenness of the human being and locates the possibility of salvation solely in grace and faith. Schopenhauer thus rejects Pelagianism, which he understands as the doctrine of salvation through human action. At the same time, however, he radically transforms the theological concepts involved. “Faith” is reinterpreted as a transformed mode of cognition that leads to the negation of the will; “grace” no longer signifies the external intervention of a transcendent personal God, but the inward advent of cognition; and “salvation” is reconceived not as postmortem reward or forensic justification, but as liberation from the will-to-live. This analysis shows that Schopenhauer preserves the basic structure of Christian soteriology while translating its theological content into the terms of his own metaphysics. He thereby integrates the Christian notion of salvation and the Indian notion of liberation under the single concept of freedom from the will. In this sense, Schopenhauer does not simply reject Christian doctrine. Rather, he demythologizes it and reconstructs it as a philosophical soteriology articulated through cognition, the advent of cognition, and liberation from the will-to-live.
