A Critique of Kleinherenbrink’s Reading of Deleuze: From the Perspective of Conceptual Consistency and Systematicity
Since the late 1990s, emerging philosophical currents such as New Materialism, Speculative Realism, Vital Materialism, and Object-Oriented Ontology have exerted a marked influence across various fields of society by criticizing anthropocentrism and emphasizing the agency of things and nonhuman entities. Many scholars aligned with these movements draw upon Deleuze and take his thought as a basis for their own claims, yet there have been few opportunities to assess the appropriateness of their interpretations of Deleuze. Among them, the speculative realist Kleinherenbrink argues that in reading Deleuze, one must remove continuity and virtuality, leaving only the surface, and thereby reconstruct his philosophy as a machinic ontology composed of the univocity of being, the exteriority of relations, and machines as the units of the real. Because this claim is ontological and metaphysical, it provides an opportunity to examine whether his interpretation of Deleuze can be regarded as one acceptable reading among others. This study analyzes Kleinherenbrink’s arguments and their supporting grounds, as well as responses to his work both in and outside Korea, and reconsiders them from the perspective of Deleuze’s philosophical system and its conceptual consistency. Through this analysis, it aims to identify in detail where and how Kleinherenbrink’s reading distorts Deleuze’s philosophy. In the course of this discussion, it will also briefly compare Alain Badiou’s ontological position—which is often regarded as diametrically opposed to Deleuze’s political philosophy—and ultimately clarify, at least in part, why Kleinherenbrink’s and other speculative realist interpretations of Deleuze have developed as they have and what their broader implications might be.
