Numerical Metaphysics in the Bouvet-Leibniz Correspondence

This article analyzes the nature and structure of the “numerical metaphysics” shared by Joachim Bouvet and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, focusing on their correspondence in the context of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century exchanges between Europe and China. Previous studies have tended to view Leibniz’s binary arithmetic primarily as a mathematical achievement and Bouvet’s interpretation of the Yijing as part of a missionary strategy. In contrast, this study examines their correspondence and related diagrams from a conceptual- historical perspective to clarify how binary arithmetic and the Chinese Yijing tradition were mutually translated within a shared metaphysical framework. In 1701, Leibniz interpreted binary arithmetic as a symbolic expression of creation, proposing that the combination of 0 and 1 signified the theological idea of creatio ex nihilo. Bouvet responded by presenting the “Xiantian Diagram (先天圖)” and arguing that the numerical system of the Chinese Yijing corresponded to Leibniz’s binary principle. Their dialogue employed the “double geometric progression” as a key concept linking Western arithmetical logic with East Asian symbolic cosmology. Bouvet also interpreted the number One(一), symbolizing Taiji(太極) or Taiyi(太一), as the number of the Creator and expressed the order of creation through the “Diagram of Honored Heaven and Low Earth(天尊地卑圖),” a modification of Pascal’s Triangle. Transmitted to the Kangxi Emperor and later incorporated by Li Guangdi(李光地) into the Zhouyi Zhezhong(周易折中) as the “Transformed Diagram of the Doubling Method(加倍變法圖),” this diagram exemplified the reinterpretation of Western mathematical representations within the Chinese tradition. This study concludes that Bouvet and Leibniz sought to construct a universal system of knowledge integrating mathematics, metaphysics, and theology, thereby creating a distinctive intellectual space where European rationality and East Asian cosmological thought converged.
