Establishing Ideal Human Relationships: Focusing on Ji Kang of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove

Ji Kang, the leader of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, was a thinker who reflected deeply on the nature of human relationships amid unstable political circumstances. His understanding of interpersonal relations is closely connected to his central philosophical proposition: “transcending social norms and entrusting oneself to nature.” After examining the external world and the essence of human life, Ji Kang formulated the prerequisites for establishing ideal human relationships. He perceived the world as composed of qi and the dual forces of yin and yang, diagnosed politics as a realm of unending disorder, and thus advocated following the inherent natural disposition of things. For the preservation of life, he emphasized yangsheng, with cultivation of the mind as its core, while urging the rejection of elements that obstruct such cultivation. Ji Kang defined fairness as the honest expression of one’s natural heart, while regarding partiality as concealing or distorting it. Accordingly, he argued that the pursuit of fairness and the rejection of partiality are essential for forming genuine human relationships. Yet, he also acknowledged that at times severing ties is necessary, and by choosing an appropriate mode of disengagement, he made his values unmistakably clear.
