A Predicative Understanding of einai in Republic through the Relationship between Knowledge and Explanation

This paper argues that the predicative interpretation is appropriate in relation to the interpretation of the Classical Greek verb ‘einai’ in the epistemological discussion of Book 5 of the Plato’s Republic. The Classical Greek verb ‘einai’ functions similarly to the English verb ‘be,’ and in Korean, it is translated as ‘to exist,’ ‘to be,’ or ‘to be true,’ depending on the context. In the epistemological argument of Book 5 of Republic, the two faculties, knowledge and opinion, are distinguished based on the objects to which they relate. and each of these objects is discussed using the verb ‘einai’ and its negative form. Therefore, It depends on how this verb ‘einai’ is understood that the epistemology of Republic can be a discussion of existence, or a discussion of predication or truth. In relation to this thesis, this paper notes that the knowledge discussed in Republic is closely related to explanation. In Republic, the person who recognizes something—the one who knows—is discussed as someone capable of explaining that something. and, explanation is always carried out in the manner of predicating an object, that is, in the manner of ‘S is P.’ In this case, regarding which predication is more suitable as an explanation, a predication stating that an object ‘is’ is more meaningful as an explanation than a predication stating that an object ‘exists.’ If this approach is appropriate, a more suitable interpretation of the verb einai could be ‘is,’ that is, a predicative interpretation.
