Bacon’s Novum Organum: The Doctrine of Idols

In Novum Organum, Bacon calls the cognitive errors that humans repeatedly commit in the course of investigating nature “idols.” These idols hinder the progress of natural inquiry, thereby making it difficult to restore humanity’s capacity to understand and use nature effectively. In his doctrine of idols, Bacon presents the causes and modes of operation of the idols, the harms they produce, and ways to identify and correct them. This paper examines three debates that have served as key points of contention in evaluating the significance and value of the doctrine of idols, and it presents an interpretive position on each issue grounded in Bacon’s original texts. First, regarding the problem that it remains unclear whether idols can be eliminated, this paper argues that this unclarity stems from Bacon’s own unclear explanation, and points out that although all idols are, on the one hand, eliminable, at the same time new idols continue to arise. Because human nature itself—the very thing that produced idols—can never be eliminated. Therefore, the author proposes that we broaden our perspective beyond the narrow debate confined to the possibility vs. impossibility of eliminating idols, and move toward a thorough analysis of the nature of human reason. Second, in response to the criticism that the doctrine of idols loses scholarly value because it extends beyond epistemology to encompass psychological, sensory, and linguistic errors, this paper argues that this very breadth is a methodological strength aimed at the actual conditions of natural inquiry, and that the charge of lacking rigor results from an unjust application of a narrowly defined epistemological standard to Bacon. Third, in response to the criticism that, because the doctrine of idols is presented prior to Bacon’s positive methodology, it fails to set out the principles of his logic in a systematic way, this paper argues that the doctrine of idols both prepares the presuppositions of inquiry and, as a set of guiding disciplinary constraints, provides the direction and standards for the subsequent development of the method; hence, negative critique and positive construction are, in principle, inseparable. Through this analysis, the paper reevaluates the scholarly value and significance of Bacon’s doctrine of idols by clarifying: (1) how Bacon transformed the fundamental difficulties of natural inquiry into problems that can be overcome, thereby affirming the possibility of inquiry; (2) the distinctive features of his logical structure and methodology as formed amid diverse problematics and tensions; and (3) how the elements of Bacon’s logic and philosophy, previously understood in a fragmented manner, can be grasped integratively in relation to one another.
