존 듀이 윤리학에서 행위(Conduct)의 구조: 도덕적 성장의 내적 변증법을 중심으로
The Structure of Conduct in John Dewey’s Ethics: Focusing on the Inner Dialectic of Moral Growth
이 논문의 목적은 존 듀이 윤리학에서 ‘행위(conduct)’ 개념의 구조를 분석함으로써, 도덕적 성장의 내적 변증법을 해명하고, 이에 따라 도덕적 역량의 본질과 방향성을 정립하는 것이다. 듀이에게 행위는 단순한 외면적 행동이 아니라 충동과 습관, 성찰과 새로운 상황이 상호작용하는 경험적 과정이다. 그는 행위를 인간의 도덕적 삶에서의 기본 단위로 보고, 행위 속에서 가치의 형성과 개혁이 동시에 이루어진다고 본다. 따라서 행위는 고정된 도덕규범이 적용된 결과가 아니라, 지속적인 성찰과 재구성을 통해 자신을 변화시키는 성장의 핵심이다. 본 논문은 이러한 행위의 구조에서 작동하는 ‘도덕적 성장의 내적 변증법’을 분석함으로써, 그 과정이 우리의 행위에 어떻게 핵심 원리로 작용하는지를 밝힌다. 이로써 듀이 윤리학이 내포하고 있는 행위의 본질을 규범적 형식이 아닌 경험적 생성의 관점에서 새롭게 조명하고, 나아가 도덕교육에서 목표로 삼을 수 있는 ‘도덕적 역량’의 초석을 다지고자 한다.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the structure of the concept of conduct in John Dewey’s ethics, thereby elucidating the inner dialectic of moral growth and, on this basis, clarifying the nature and direction of moral capabilities. For Dewey, conduct is not merely outward behavior but an experiential process in which impulse, habit, reflection, and new situations interact. He regards conduct as the basic unit of human moral life and maintains that the formation and reform of values take place simultaneously within conduct. Accordingly, conduct is not the result of the application of fixed moral norms but the core of growth through which the self is transformed by ongoing reflection and reconstruction. By analyzing the inner dialectic of moral growth operating within this structure of conduct, this paper examines how such a process functions as a fundamental principle of our actions. In doing so, it re-illuminates the nature of conduct implicit in Dewey’s ethics from the perspective of experiential generation rather than normative form, and further aims to lay the groundwork for understanding the “moral capabilities” that can serve as an aim of moral education.
