An Intellectual Tennis Match: The Rematch Between Thompson and Benacerraf
톰슨과 베나세라프는 초능력 작업을 수행하는 톰슨의 전등이 가능한지를 두고 와 첫 번째 경기를 펼쳤다. “이전 상태가 최종 상태를 논리적으로 결정하지 않는다.”라는 전제가 해결되지 않아 그 경기는 무승부로 끝났다. “논리적으로 가능하다고 해서 물리적으로도 가능한가?”라는 새로운 질문으로 둘은 재대결을 벌인다. 무한 가속의 문제, 연속성의 원리, 뉴턴의 운동 법칙 따위가 심판이 된다. 과연 톰슨의 전등을 실제로 만들 수 있는가? 두 지적인 선수의 두 번째 대결을 따라가 보자.
Thomson and Benacerraf played their first match over whether Thomson’s lamp could perform super-task. The match ended in a draw because the premise “The previous state does not logically determine the final state” remained unresolved. They rematch with a new question: “If it’s logically possible, is it also physically possible?” The problem of infinite acceleration, the principle of continuity, and Newton’s laws of motion become the referees. Can Thomson’s lamp actually be built? Let’s follow the second duel between these two intellectual players.
