갈레노스의 ‘영혼의 치유’ ‒ 고대 의학과 철학의 교차로에서 ‒
The Cure of the Soul in Galen – On the Crossroads of Medicine and Philosophy in Antiquity –
본 연구의 목표는 갈레노스가 모색한 영혼 치유법이 지닌 학문적 정체성을 규명하는 것이다. 서양 고대에서 철학은 ‘영혼의 의술’로 불리곤 했다. 이러한 철학과 의술의 유비는 철학과 의술의 분업을 전제하며, 의술을 신체를 다루는 기술로 한정한다. 그렇다면 갈레노스는 ‘영혼의 질병’을 치유하기 위해 의술의 경계를 벗어나 철학의 영역으로 넘어간 것일까? 아니면 철학을 대체할 영혼의 의술을 모색한 것일까? 이러한 질문에 답하기 위해 그가 치유의 대상으로 삼은 영혼의 질병이 무엇이고, 그것에 대한 치료법이 무엇인지 살펴볼 것이다. 또한 철학과 의학의 학문적 정체성을 비롯해 두 학문의 경계와 관계에 대한 갈레노스의 생각을 추적할 것이다. 필자는 갈레노스가 의술과 철학의 분업을 폐기한 것이 아니라, 재편한 것임을 주장할 것이다. 이 재편된 분업 모델에 따르면, 의술의 업무 안에 철학적 돌봄과는 차별적인 영혼의 돌봄이 포함된다. 이런 식으로 갈레노스가 추구한 ‘영혼의 의술’은 고대 의학과 철학의 협업에 기초한 통합적인 치유의 기술로 드러날 것이다. 하지만 갈레노스는 의학 체계 내에 일관적이고 체계적인 영혼의 치유법을 정립하는 데에는 이르지 못한 것으로 평가된다.
This study aims to clarify the disciplinary identity of the medicine of the soul which Galen sought to develop. In antiquity, philosophy was frequently described as a “medicine of the soul,” an analogy that presupposes a division of labor between philosophy and medicine and confines medicine to the art concerned with the body. Did Galen cross beyond the boundaries of medicine into the domain of philosophy in order to cure the “diseases of the soul,” or did he attempt to develop a medical art of the soul that could stand in place of philosophy? To address this question, I examine the kinds of diseases Galen sought to treat and the methods he proposed for their cure. I also trace his reflections on the disciplinary identities of philosophy and medicine and on the boundaries and relations between the two. I argue that Galen did not abolish the division of labor between medicine and philosophy, but rather reorganized it. In the reorganized model, the practice of medicine encompasses a form of care for the soul that is distinct from philosophical therapy. Thus, the “medicine of the soul” Galen envisioned emerges as an integrated therapeutic art grounded in the collaboration between ancient medicine and philosophy. However, Galen did not manage to establish within his medical system a coherent and systematic method for the treatment of the soul.
