John Buridan’s Answer to Skepticism
장 뷰리당의 회의주의 해결책
Later medieval philosophers were confronted with a radical skeptical challenge arising from the doctrine of divine omnipotence. John Buridan (ca. 1300-61) suggested an intriguing solution to this challenge with his theory of certainty and evidentness. Most scholars have concluded that his solution relies upon his fallibilist conception of knowledge and justification. In this paper, I argue that, despite its intuitive appeal, the fallibilist interpretation is problematic and that once we fully appreciate Buridan’s epistemology, it will emerge as a restricted form of infallibilism.
후기 중세의 철학자들은 신의 전능성으로부터 비롯되는 회의주의의 문제 를 해결하려고 시도했다. 이들 중, 장 뷰리당(ca. 1300-61)은 그의 확실성 이 론과 명증성 이론을 통해 회의주의에 대한 독창적인 해결책을 제시했다. 그 리고 현대의 많은 해석자들은 그의 해결책이 그의 오류가능론적 인식론에 토대를 두고 있다는 결론을 내렸다. 이 글에서 나는 뷰리당의 인식론에 대 한 이러한 오류가능론적 해석이 성립하기 어렵다는 것, 그리고 더 면밀히 살펴본다면 그의 인식론은 제한된 형태의 오류불가능론적 입장이라는 것을 주장할 것이다.
