Nietzsche’s Critique of Morality and Revaluation of Values

This paper critically examines the limitations of Anglo-American philosophical interpretations of Nietzsche’s revaluation of values, and addresses the practical, normative problematic of his revaluation through the perspectives of the fundamental transposition of life and morality and the self-overcoming of morality. Based on a meta-ethical concern that demands a normative justification, the Anglo-American scholars read Nietzsche’s revaluation as a ‘positive agenda’ to establish new alternative values to replace old morality. Behind this perspective lie two prejudices: a foundationalist prejudice that views philosophy as a theory of principles and assumes Nietzsche must have presented alternative values as a principled solution; and a dichotomous prejudice that treats the ‘negation’ carried out by Nietzsche’s revaluation as a mere preparatory step or prerequisite for ‘affirmation’, thereby viewing it as a linear, causal process. However, Nietzsche’s original concern does not lie in preparing an alternative after the destruction of old morality, but rather in how to effectively eliminate the old morality that still exerts a powerful influence today and how to reduce its dominance over life. To this end, Nietzsche seeks to restore the health of life and the naturalness of morality, and through a fundamental repositioning of life and morality, he attempts an ‘inversion of morality’—dragging morality down from its position as an absolute ‘principle of life’ and returning it to its original role as a ‘tool of life’. As a result of this inversion, life, having regained its health, uses the restored natural morality as a tool not to suppress human instincts and impulses, but to regulate the anti-natural morality and décadence instincts that threaten life. This is what Nietzsche calls the self-overcoming of morality. Thus, it is revealed that Nietzsche’s revaluation is not merely a project of theoretical refutation of old morality or a principled justification of alternative values, but a practical, normative project carried out through the self-overcoming of morality.
