A New Interpretation of the Role of ‘shifei zhi xin’ in Mencius

This study offers a reinterpretation of Mencius’s theory of the Four Sprouts (四端說) by reconsidering the distinctive status and function of shifei zhi xin (是非之心), the Heart-mind of Right and Wrong. Its aim is to explore how Mencian ethics might move beyond the limitations of family-centered morality and provide resources for a modern social ethics. Whereas previous studies have generally treated the Four Sprouts within an affective framework, regarding them as moral emotions or cognitively structured emotions, this study argues that an important distinction should be drawn between the Three Sprouts and the Heart-mind of Right and Wrong. While the Three Sprouts — the Heart-minds of Compassion, Shame, and Deference — are primarily affective and intuitive in character, the Heart-mind of Right and Wrong functions as a distinct cognitive and rational faculty that enables one to reflect upon, assess, and judge what is right or wrong in a given situation. In classical Confucian thought, familial affection grounded in ren (仁) and qinqin (親親), and understood within the moral order of Heaven, was often accorded priority in ethical life. Such a relational orientation, however, may generate difficulties in securing impartial judgment when familial obligations come into conflict with broader considerations of righteousness (yi, 義), propriety (li, 禮), or public justice. Although this family-centered ethical structure may have been intelligible within the social conditions of agrarian communities, it faces significant challenges in contemporary society, which is increasingly individualized, industrialized, and information-based. In such a context, privileging particular familial ties over public norms and impartial standards may be regarded as partial, unfair, or even nepotistic, thereby limiting the contemporary applicability of traditional Confucian ethics. Against this background, this study focuses on the cognitive and inferential function of the Heart-mind of Right and Wrong as a capacity for critically assessing moral responses and judging a situation on its own merits, rather than solely in terms of particular affective or familial attachments. By reinterpreting shifei zhi xin as a reflective faculty capable of regulating and evaluating the affective responses associated with the other Three Sprouts, this study seeks to establish a philosophical basis for extending Mencian ethics beyond the sphere of family-centered morality toward a more impartial and publicly oriented social ethics. In this way, the reinterpretation of the Heart-mind of Right and Wrong offers a conceptual framework through which Mencian philosophy may be reconstructed as a viable ethical resource for addressing the moral conflicts of contemporary society.
