AI와 레비나스(1). 인공지능의 알고리즘 전체성과 타자성의 위기 : 레비나스의 ‘동일자의 제국주의’ 비판을 중심으로
AI and Levinas(1). Algorithmic Totality of AI and the Crisis of Alterity: Focusing on Levinas’s Critique of the ‘Imperialism of the Same’
본 연구는 생성형 인공지능(AI) 기술이 인간의 실존적 조건을 재규정하고 타자와의 관계를 매개하는 근본적인 장치로 기능하게 된 현대 사회의 윤리적 지형을 에마뉘엘 레비나스의 철학적 관점에서 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. AI 챗봇과 대화를 나누다 자살을 결심한 청소년, 챗봇과 결혼을 한 여성과 같은 최근의 사건들은 기술이 인간의 삶 및 인간 간 관계를 근본적으로 교란하고 있음을 극단적으로 보여준다. 본 논문은 이러한 현상이 단순한 기술적 부작용이 아니라 타자를 동일자의 지평으로 포섭하려는 서양 철학의 전체주의적 특성이 AI라는 재현 체계를 통해 기술적으로 완성된 결과라고 진단한다. 효율성과 예측 가능성을 중심으로 하는 AI가 인간 존재를 데이터와 알고리즘으로 환원하고 포섭하려 한다는 점에서, AI는 레비나스가 경계했던 폭력적 전체주의의 새로운 형태가 될 수 있다. 이런 문제의식에 기초하여, 본 연구는 레비나스가 시도하는 전체성 비판의 내용과 그 의의를 살피는 것을 출발점으로 삼아, AI 시스템이 인간을 데이터화하고 범주화하는 방식이 레비나스가 비판했던 동일자의 폭력과 어떻게 맞닿아 있는지를 분석한 후, AI 기술이 타자, 나 그리고 타자와 맺는 나의 관계에 어떤 변화를 불러일으키는지를, 또 그런 식의 변화가 우리의 삶에 어떤 영향과 변형을 일으킬 것인지를 검토할 것이다. 마지막으로 우리는 레비나스의 철학에 기초하여 AI 시대에 우리가 견지해야 할 삶의 태도와 방향성은 어떤 것이고, 또 어떻게 현실 속에서 구현될 수 있는지를 간단히 언급할 것이다.
This study aims to examine the ethical landscape of contemporary society through the philosophical lens of Emmanuel Levinas, particularly as Generative Artificial Intelligence(AI) has come to function as a fundamental apparatus that redefines the human existential condition and mediates relationships with the Other. Recent incidents—such as an adolescent committing suicide after interacting with an AI chatbot or a woman marrying a chatbot— starkly demonstrate that technology is fundamentally disrupting human life and interpersonal relationships. This paper diagnoses these phenomena not merely as technical side effects, but as the technological culmination of the totalizing nature of Western philosophy, which seeks to subsume the Other into the horizon of the Same through the representational system of AI. In that AI focuses on efficiency and predictability, thereby reducing and subsuming human existence into data and algorithms, it may represent a new form of the violent totalitarianism that Levinas warned against. Based on this critical awareness, this study investigates the changes AI technology brings to the Other, the Self, and the relationship between the two, while evaluating how such shifts impact and transform our lives.
