Exploring the Nursing Philosophy of the Analects(論語) and Its Potential Applications: Focusing on Establishing Nursing Professionalism and Enhancing Interdisciplinary Collaboration Through Confucius’s Correct Naming and Harmony Without Uniformity Principles

This paper begins with the awareness that in the rapidly changing modern healthcare environment, nurses are required to develop a more solid professional identity and ethical consciousness beyond mere technical proficiency. Accordingly, this paper seeks to overcome the limitations of Western-centered nursing ethics discourse, which emphasizes the individual, and to integrate the values of Eastern philosophy—which prioritizes community and relational ethics—into nursing. To achieve this, it seeks to reinterpret key concepts from the Analects. This reinterpretation aims to establish a nursing professional perspective and explore ways to strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration capabilities. The main discussions of this paper are as follows. First, we aim to expand the concept of Zhengming (正名) into a role ethics of ‘aligning names with reality’ to clarify the standards and responsibilities of true ‘nursing professionalism’. Second, it interprets benevolence (仁) and forgiveness (恕) as a care ethic of love, empathy, and consideration, proposing them as the foundation of nursing professional ethics encompassing relationships with patients, caregivers, colleagues, and other professions. Third, it establishes harmony without uniformity (和而不同) as a principle of ‘harmony acknowledging mutual differences’ rather than ‘uniform consensus,’ proposing a direction for horizontal communication and mutually beneficial cooperation within medical organizations where hierarchy and conflict persist. Fourth, it proposes growth strategies for holistic nursing professionals integrating knowledge, virtue, and practice, by establishing learning (學) and self-cultivation (修己) as the foundation for self-reflection and lifelong learning. In conclusion, this study connects the professional identity (正名), care ethics (仁·恕), collaborative principle (和而不同), and professional development (學·修己) of nurses into a single framework. It aims to present a direction for resolving the ethical and organizational challenges facing modern nursing and to propose practical tasks at the levels of nursing education, practice, and organizational culture.
