The Lies of the Sage and the Virtue of Honesty – The Cases of Confucius and Mencius –

Do sages lie? If sages do lie, how can such actions be justified? Two of the most frequently discussed cases of sage deception in the Confucian tradition are the illness-pretext episodes involving Confucius and Ru Bei (孺悲) in Analects 17.20 and Mencius and the king in Mencius 2B2. The traditional commentator Zhu Xi (朱熹) connected the two cases within the framework of “instruction through refusing to teach” (buxie zhi jiaohui 不屑之敎誨), suggesting that the sages’ deceptive acts had a certain pedagogical significance. Paul D’Ambrosio reads this pedagogical dimension of the traditional commentarial interpretation in consequentialist terms, as justifying sage deception by appeal to a greater educational end. This paper reexamines that consequentialist reading by drawing on Sungwoo Um’s account of honesty as “respect for the right not to be deceived” and Quinn White’s “relationships view” of honesty. It argues that the two cases cannot be understood merely as consequentialist practices aimed at pedagogical effects; rather, they represent distinct communicative practices shaped by different relational contexts and purposes. Furthermore, through a comparative analysis of the two cases, this study argues that the norms governing communication must be understood not only in terms of the relationships among the immediate participants but also within a broader relational context that includes third parties.
