An Exploration of the ‘Seonin(仙人)’ Archetype in Korean Origin Narratives – The Horizon of the Archaeology of Knowledge and Ontological Restoration –
This study aims to move beyond the existing limitations of positivism and Orientalism in academia, which have long consumed Korean origin narratives merely as “historical data” or “taxidermied myths.” Instead, it seeks to ontologically restore the fundamental thinking on human existence (Primitive Ontology) concealed within these narratives into the arena of philosophical discourse. To this end, from the horizon of an “archaeology of knowledge”—which excavates the strata of thought prior to rigorously conceptualized discourse—this paper explores the origin thoughts multi-layeredly deposited in texts such as the Samguk Yusa, Jewang Ungi, and epigraphs from the Three Kingdoms period. As a result, the study elucidates that a unique, integrated human archetype flows through the depths of ancient Korean origin narratives, one in which a descendant of heaven (天孫), a monarch (君王), and a transcendental immortal (仙人) are unitarily combined without division. Furthermore, by expanding the concept of “Gyeomseong (兼聖),” proposed by the modern philosopher Jeon Byeong-hun, within the context of the history of philosophical thought, this study demonstrates that this integrated human figure is an undivided archetype preceding the later demarcation of personality types in China into Confucianism (governance) and Daoism (transcendence). By revealing that the ontological archetype of “Seonin (仙人)”—which combines governance and transcendence, ethics and cosmology—served as both the ideological centripetal force of ancient Korean states and the ideological foundation enabling the independent reception of foreign thoughts such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, this study provides an exploratory foundation for newly reconstructing the history of Korean philosophical thought.
