Being affected (Affektion) and the Exterior of Consciousness: Reflections on Husserl’s Transcendental Idealism
This paper aims to clarify the character of Husserl’s transcendental idealism by examining how he deals with being affected (Affektion). It first investigates the relation between being affected and idealism in Kant and Fichte. In doing so, it becomes clear that affection requires the exterior of the subject, and that a consistent idealism must therefore reduce being affected to spontaneity. Next, the paper shows that at the outset of transcendental phenomenology Husserl did not focus on being affected, and that he was thus able to establish transcendental idealism even prior to entering transcendental phenomenology. With the transition to genetic phenomenology, however, Husserl confronts the problem of being affected and preserves idealism by interpreting it as an inner dynamic of consciousness. Within this framework, primal impression is a plausible candidate for the origin of hyle, while teleology functions as a regulating principle of hyle. Interpreted in this way, Husserl’s monadology exhibits an affinity with Leibniz’s monadology, which is an idealism of pure spontaneity. In this sense, the later Husserl’s transcendental idealism, having resolved the problem of being affected, reveals itself as an idealism demonstrated by transcendental phenomenology.
