민주시민 교육과 유학(儒學)의 덕론(德論) ― 초등학교 도덕과의 민주시민 교육과 『논어』의 군자론을 연계하여 ―
Civic Education and Confucian Virtue Theory – By linking civic education in the department of morality in elementary school with the theory of Wise Man in the Analects
민주시민 교육에 관한 문제는 현대 사회의 주요한 화두이다. 그러나 한국의 시민교육은 독립 교과로 편성되어 있지 않으며, 각 교과교육에서 역할을 분담하고 있는 형태이다. 도덕과 교육에서는 ‘인성 교육’뿐만 아니라 ‘민주시민 교육’에도 비중을 두고 있지만, 이 두 가지 교육 간에는 위계구조 문제뿐만 아니라 개념이나 내용 또는 교육적인 해석과 적용 등등의 적지 않은 논의거리들이 있다.
이상적인 인격자인 군자의 덕성 함양을 본질적인 가치로 하고 있는 유학(儒學)의 덕론(德論)은 군자의 공공성과 실천성을 강조하고 있는데, 이러한 공공성과 실천성은 현대에서 함양하고자 하는 민주시민의 역량이기도 하다. 또한, 군자의 화이부동(和而不同) 정신은 가치 다원을 추구하는 현대 시민교육의 지향점을 성찰적으로 탐색하는 데에 있어서 긍정적인 시사점을 줄 수 있으며, 수기치인(修己治人)의 방법적 원리는 인성 교육과 시민교육의 중층구조를 이해하고 시민 역량 함양 방법을 구체화하는 데에 기여할 수 있다. 온고지신(溫故知新)의 측면에서 사회⋅문화적인 배경이 되는 전통을 성찰하고 계승하는 것은 현대 민주시민 교육을 보다 풍부히 하고 교육적 실효성을 제고하기 위한 것이다.
The issue of civic education is a major topic in modern society. However, Korea’s civic education is not organized as an independent subject, revealing a form in which each subject shares roles. In the education of the department of morality, we focus on not only character education but also ‘civic education’, but there are a number of issues being discussed, such as the hierarchical structure between character education and civic education, the concepts and content of these two types of education, and the issues of educational interpretation and application.
Confucian virtue theory, which regards the cultivation of the virtue of the wise man as an ideal character as its essential value, emphasizes the public nature and practicality of the wise man, and public nature and practicality are also the capabilities of democratic citizens that are sought to be cultivated in modern times. In addition, the wise man’s spirit of harmony but not uniformity(和而不同) can give positive implications in reflectively exploring the direction of modern civic education that pursues plurality of values, and the methodological principles of self-cultivation and governing people(修己治人) can also contribute to understanding the multi-layered structure of character education and civic education and to specifying methods for cultivating civic capabilities. Reflecting on and inheriting traditions, which are social and cultural backgrounds in terms of wen-gu-zhi-xin(溫故知新), is aimed at enriching modern civic education and enhancing educational effectiveness.
