원초적 축소주의와 사용 다원주의
Primitive Deflationism and Alethic Pluralismat the Level of Use
어세이의 원초적 축소주의는 진리 개념의 원초성과 진리 속성의 축소성을 주장한다. 필자는 본 논문에서 진리 개념의 원초성을 지지하는 어세이의 전략이 곤란에 빠짐을 주장할 것이다. 논문은 먼저 어세이의 전략에서 중요하게 활용되는 전제가 무엇인지를 점검하고, 진리 다원주의의 한 갈래인 카스퍼스의 사용 다원주의를 살펴본다. 비록 카스퍼스는 어세이의 이론에 대한 비판을 의도하지는 않았지만, 필자는 규범성을 가지지 않는 영역에서 진리 표현 “참이다”는 규범성을 가지는 영역에서의 진리 표현과 다른 언어 게임을 따른다는 카스퍼스의 주장이 어세이의 주요 전제를 위협한다는 것을 보일 것이다. 이어서 어세이가 내놓을 수 있는 가능한 재반론인, 언어 사용 실천에서 어떤 게임을 따르는가는 명제적 사고 사이의 동치 관계와는 별개의 사안이라는 반론을 검토한다. 이에 대해 필자는, 만약 사용과 사상을 별개의 사안으로 분리하게 될 경우 진리 개념의 원초성과 더불어 진리 속성의 축소성까지 함께 주장하는 어세이의 입장은 이론 내적으로 비일관성에 직면하게 된다고 논증할 것이다. 끝으로, 개념과 속성은 구별되지만 이것이 개념과 속성 사이의 밀접한 관련까지 부정하는 것은 아니라는 것을 부연하고, 이를 근거로 하여 이론 내적 불안정성의 문제는 여전히 남는다는 주장을 덧붙일 것이다.
Asay’s primitive deflationism insists both the indefinability of the concept of truth and the insubstantivity of truth properties. In this paper, I will argue that Asay’s strategy of supporting the primitiveness of the concept of truth is in trouble. First, I briefly outline his primitive deflationism and highlight which premise is crucial in his theory. Next, I examine Kaspers’ pluralism at the level of use, a branch of alethic pluralism. Although Kaspers does not intend to criticize Asay’s theory, I argue that Kaspers’ argument that the expressions “true” used in a non-normative domain can follow different language games than the expressions in normative domains threatens Asay’s main premise. Then, I examine one possible counterargument that Asay can choose, that the games followed in languistic practice are not directly relevant to the issue concerning the equivalence relation between propositional thoughts. However I argue that if use and thoughts are treated as separate issues, Asay’s theory including both the primitiveness of the concept of truth and the deflationary property of truth faces theoretical inconsistency. Finally I add that although concepts and properties are distinct, this does not mean that the close relation between them is denied. Therefore, the theoretical instability is still problematic.
