하이데거의 ‘표명(Bekundung)’ 개념과 비언어적 커뮤니케이션의 존재론적 가능성
Heidegger’s Concept of “Bekundung” and the Ontological Possibilities of Nonverbal Communication
비언어적 커뮤니케이션은 심리학 및 사회학 분야에서 오랫동안 그 중요성이 강조되어 왔으나, 기존 논의는 대체로 실증적·기능적 접근에 머무르며 그 존재론적 함의를 충분히 조명하지 못하고 있다. 특히 코로나19 팬데믹 시기 마스크 착용의 일상화는 얼굴 표정, 입모양, 미소 등 주요한 비언어적 신호를 차단함으로써 감정의 전달과 상호 공감 능력을 크게 저하시켰으며, 이는 인간 간 정서적 단절과 소통의 오해를 심화시킨 대표적인 사례로 주목된다. 본 연구는 이러한 사회적 현상을 단순한 소통의 문제로 국한하지 않고, 비언어적 커뮤니케이션을 철학적 관점에서 재조명하고자 한다. 특히 하이데거(M. Heidegger)의 『존재와 시간』에 등장하는 ‘표명(Bekundung)’ 개념을 중심으로 언어의 존재론적 기초를 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 비언어적 커뮤니케이션의 다양한 양상을 탐구하였다. 하이데거의 표명 개념은 비언어적 소통을 단순한 정보 전달의 수단이 아니라, 인간 존재가 세계 내에서 자신을 드러내는 근원적인 방식으로 이해할 수 있는 철학적 자원을 제공한다. 이러한 존재론적 고찰은 현대 커뮤니케이션 이론의 기반을 확장할 뿐만 아니라, 공적 담론과 사회적 관계의 구조를 재성찰하는 데 중요한 이론적 토대를 마련할 수 있을 것이다.
While the importance of non-verbal communication (NVC) has long been emphasized in the fields of psychology and sociology, existing discussions have largely remained confined to empirical and functional approaches, failing to sufficiently illuminate its ontological implications. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, the normalization of mask-wearing significantly reduced the transmission of emotions and inter-personal empathy by obstructing key non-verbal signals such as facial expressions, lip movements, and smiles. This phenomenon is highlighted as a prime example of deepening emotional disconnection and communication misunderstandings among individuals. This study aims not to confine such social phenomena to mere communication problems, but to re-examine non-verbal communication from a philosophical perspective. Specifically, focusing on the concept of ‘Bekundung’ (attestation or manifestation) as it appears in Martin Heidegger’s Being and Time, this research examines the ontological foundation of language and, based on this, explores various aspects of non-verbal communication. Heidegger’s concept of Bekundung offers philosophical resources to understand non-verbal communication not merely as a means of information transfer, but as a fundamental way in which human existence discloses itself in the world. This ontological inquiry not only expands the foundation of modern communication theory but also provides an important theoretical basis for re-examining the structure of public discourse and social relationships.
