플라톤의 ‘절제’: 소프로쉬네 개념사 안에서의 고찰
Plato’s Sōphrosynē: An Examination in Its Conceptual History
우리말 ‘절제’로 번역되는 ‘소프로쉬네’는 호메로스에게서 처음 그 사용이 발견된 이래로 다양한 용례를 보이는 다의적인 개념인 것은 물론, 플라톤 당대에는 그 가치평가에 있어서도 여러 양상을 보여주는 매우 복합적인 개념이다. 플라톤은 당대에 평가절하된 소프로쉬네의 가치를 복권하고, 전통적인 소프로쉬네의 용례와 의미를 되살려 자신의 소프로쉬네 개념을 정립한다. 즉, 자기 지식’(self-knowledge)과 ‘자기 억제’(self-restraint)라는 소프로쉬네의 전통적인 핵심 의미를 그대로 가지고, 여기에 한마음(homonoia), 조화(harmonia, symphōnia) 등의 개념을 부여하여 소프로쉬네가 가지는 폴리스의 덕으로서의 의미와 가치를 복권하는 것이다.
이 글은 소프로쉬네 개념사를 추적함으로써, ‘절제’라는 번역어 뒤에 가려진, 플라톤의 소프로쉬네가 가지는 다중적인 의미, 특히 폴리스의 덕으로 기능하는 소프로쉬네의 의미를 재발견한다. 플라톤의 경우, ‘소프로쉬네’와 ‘절제’ 사이에서 연구자들에게 발견되지 못한 의미는, 이른바 지적인 의미인 ‘분별’이 아닌, 바로 정치적 의미에서의 ‘조화’이다. 다시 말해, 아리스토텔레스로부터 그 원인을 찾을 수 있는, 플라톤의 소프로쉬네 개념에서 잃어버린 바는 폴리스의 덕으로서의 면모이다.
The Greek term sōphrosynē, often translated as “moderation” or “temperance,” is a multifaceted concept that first appeared in the works of Homer and has since taken on various meanings. By the time of Plato, sōphrosynē had evolved into a highly complex idea, marked by diverse interpretations and shifting values. Plato sought to restore the diminished status of sōphrosynē in his time by reviving its traditional usages and meanings, thereby establishing his own conception of the term. He retained its traditional core meanings, namely “self-knowledge” and “self-restraint”, and enriched the concept by incorporating ideas such as homonoia and harmonia. That is, Plato reestablished sōphrosynē as a political virtue.
In this paper, I trace the conceptual history of sōphrosynē in order to rediscover the multiple layers of meaning obscured by its modern translation, particularly its political dimension as a civic virtue in Plato’s philosophy. For Plato, the meaning often overlooked by scholars in the gap between sōphrosynē and its translation as “temperance” or “moderation” is not the so-called intellectual sense of prudence, but rather the political meaning of harmony. In other words, what has been lost in interpretations of Plato’s sōphrosynē—a loss that can be traced to Aristotle—is precisely its aspect as a political virtue.
