퇴계 격대교육의 현대적 가치에 관한 연구 ― 손자 안도에게 보낸 <家書>를 중심으로 ―
A Study on the modern value of Toe-Gye`s Alternate-Generation Educational : Focus on the letter Toegye sent to Ando his grandson
격대교육은 조부모가 손자와 함께 생활하는 우리의 전통적인 가정교육이었으며, 세대를 뛰어넘는 소통의 한 방식이기도 했다. 그러나 오늘날 가족의 구성 형태는 다양해졌으며, 특히 핵가족화가 되면서 조손이 따로 사는 경우가 흔해졌고, 격대교육은 기대하기 어려워졌다. 가정에서의 정서 교육은 사람다운 사람을 키우는 우리 사회의 중요한 과제로 떠오르고 있으며, 오늘날 학교 시스템으로는 대신할 수 없는 교육이다.
퇴계집에 수록된 ｢가서｣에는 철저한 생활인으로서의 퇴계의 모습을 볼 수 있는데, 그러한 삶의 태도는 자녀교육에 그대로 반영되었다. 본고에서는 ｢가서｣ 가운데서도 손자 안도에게 보낸 서찰을 중심으로 연구가 진행되었다. 퇴계의 격대교육은 조부모가 손자와 직접 인격적 교류를 나누는 교육 방식으로, 세대 간 연결고리 회복의 모델이 될 수 있다.
오늘날 교육은 입시 중심, 성과 중심으로 기울어 있지만 퇴계의 격대교육은 사람됨, 관계, 공동체, 도덕적 성숙을 우선시하였다. 일상생활에서 예와 경의 실천을 강조한 퇴계의 교육은 삶과 학문을 분리하지 않고 일치시키는 인성교육의 본보기가 될 수 있다. 이러한 퇴계의 이론은 지식과 실천의 연결을 중시하는 오늘날의 교육 철학과도 연결된다. 퇴계는 자기 수양 + 관계적 배움 + 공동 실천이라는 삼각 구조를 통해 지식이 ‘사람을 살리고 세상을 바꾸는 도구’가 되어야 한다고 믿었다. 오늘날 퇴계의 격대교육의 가치는 세대 간 단절을 회복하는 정서적 연결망이 되는 동시에 가정과 지역 사회를 연결하는 인성 교육 플랫폼을 창출할 수 있고, 지속 가능한 공동체 윤리의 토대가 될 수 있을 것이다.
Alternate-generation education was a traditional form of family education in Korea, in which grandparents lived together with their grandchildren, serving as a means of communication across generations. However, in today’s society, family structures have become more diverse, and with the spread of nuclear families, it has become common for grandparents and grandchildren to live apart, making such education increasingly rare. Emotional education within the family is now emerging as an essential task for nurturing truly humane individuals in our society—an area of education that the current school system cannot replace.
The Gaseo (Family Letters) included in the Collected Works of Toegye (Toegyejip) reveal Toegye as a thoroughly disciplined and practical individual, and this way of life was directly reflected in his approach to educating his descendants. This study focuses specifically on the letters Toegye sent to his grandson Ando. Toegye’s alternate-generation education, in which grandparents engage in direct and personal interaction with their grandchildren, can serve as a model for restoring intergenerational connections.
While modern education tends to focus on entrance exams and performance outcomes, Toegye’s alternate-generation education prioritized personal character, relationships, community, and moral maturity. His emphasis on the practice of ye (propriety) and gyeong (reverence) in daily life serves as a model of character education that does not separate life from learning but instead unifies the two. This aspect of Toegye’s philosophy aligns closely with contemporary educational ideals that emphasize the integration of knowledge and practice. Today, the value of Toegye’s alternate-generation education lies in its potential to rebuild emotional bonds across generations, serve as a platform for character education that connects families and local communities, and provide a foundation for a sustainable communal ethic.
