Sexuality as Fundamental Intentionality Toward the Other – Michel Henry’s Critique and Merleau-Ponty’s “Being-in/toward the Other” –
This paper examines Merleau-Ponty’s interpretation of sexuality as a fundamental intentionality directed toward the Other, rather than as a mere physiological reflex or psychological representation. For Merleau-Ponty, the human being is not an isolated consciousness but a bodily existence perpetually open to the world and to others, a mode of existence he formulates as “being in-and-toward (être à)”. In this formulation, the preposition ‘à’ signifies not only location but also a dynamic structure of orientation toward and belonging within a relation. Sexuality, therefore, does not consist in a superficial contact with the Other’s body; rather, it involves a reciprocal penetration of interiors and a transgression of boundaries through which self and Other enter into an intersensory unity. At the same time, this simultaneous structure of orientation and belonging necessarily entails a constitutive gap that prevents absolute coincidence between self and Other. Michel Henry interprets this non-coincidence as evidence of the failure of sexuality, arguing that sexual intentionality can reach only the body as object and never the immanent life of the Other. However, for Merleau-Ponty, flesh manifests itself only through incarnation in the body, and the sensible body constitutes the sole possible access to the Other. Because incarnation is always an incomplete and processual movement, sensible contact through incarnation never discloses the Other fully or without remainder. Nevertheless, each moment of such contact makes possible the experience of an ontological kinship of flesh within which self and Other already belong together. In this way, sexuality reveals the genesis of a being-in-and-toward the Other, constituted through the inseparable movement of mutual orientation and belonging.
