추구가치성의 두 가지 갈래
Two Branches of Pursuitworthiness
래리 라우든이 발견/정당화의 맥락 구별을 비판하며 추구/수용의 맥락 구별을 제시한 이후 추구가치성은 본격적인 철학적 논의의 주제로 떠오르게 되었다. 이 논문의 목적은 현재 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 추구가치성 논의의 지형을 체계적으로 정리하고, 서로 다른 특징을 가진 두 가지 갈래로의 분류를 제안하는 것이다. 이 논문에서는 추구가치성 논의를 ‘수용 후보의 발전’에 초점을 두는 첫 번째 갈래와 ‘효율적 학습’에 주목하는 두 번째 갈래로 분류할 것을 제안하며, 이들 논의는 추구가치성의 평가 대상, 기준, 이유 등을 서로 다르게 간주함을 보이고자 한다. 첫 번째 갈래는 라우든의 기획과 궤를 같이하는 갈래로, 주로 이론 혹은 이론 체계를 발전시키는 것에 집중하며 이들이 지니는 수용의 후보로서의 잠재력을 바탕으로 추구가치성을 평가한다. 반면 두 번째 갈래는 라우든의 사상에서는 두드러지지 않았던 찰스 샌더스 퍼스의 연구의 경제 사상에 주목하며, 실험이나 가설, 모형 등 다양한 대상에 대한 추구를 통해 인식적 목적에 얼마나 효율적으로 다가설 수 있는지를 묻는다. 이러한 두 갈래로의 분류는 현대 추구가치성 논의의 지형을 체계적으로 파악하는 데 길잡이 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다.
Since Larry Laudan criticised the context distinction between discovery and justification and instead proposed a distinction between the contexts of pursuit and acceptance, the notion of pursuitworthiness has become a serious topic of philosophical discussions. This paper aims to provide a systematic overview of the current landscape of the discussions on pursuitworthiness and to propose a two-fold classification that captures the diverging directions of the discussions. I suggest that the current discussions can be classified into two branches: one that centres on the development of candidates for acceptance, and another that emphasises efficient learning through pursuit activities. These two branches diverge in how they conceive the object, criteria, and rationale for pursuitworthiness assessment. More specifically, the first branch, aligned with Laudan’s project, focuses on the development of theories or the systems of theories and evaluates their pursuitworthiness in terms of their potential as candidates of acceptance. In contrast, the second branch emphasises C. S. Peirce’s idea of the economy of research and evaluates the pursuitworthiness of diverse targets by asking how efficiently their pursuits would contribute to certain epistemic goals. This classification would offer a useful guidance for mapping the current terrain of the pursuitworthiness discussions.
