중봉 조헌의 시(詩)에 나타난 ‘직(直)’

본 논문은 조선 중기의 학자이자 의병장인 조헌(趙憲, 1544-1592)의 시(詩)를 통해 그의 ‘직(直)’ 정신을 규명하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 조헌은 유학(儒學)적 가치관을 기반으로 국가와 백성을 위한 올곧음을 의병장의 삶으로 실천한 인물이었다. 이런 대의적 행보를 담은 그의 시에는『논어(論語)』에서 강조된 ‘직(直)’의 철학적 의미가 투영되어 있었다. 조헌은 국가적 위기 상황에서 군주의 도덕적 책무를 강조하는 한편, 신하로서의 정직성과 도덕적 실천을 중시하였다. 또한 백성들에게 윤리적 지향점을 제시하는 태도를 시를 통해 표현하였다. 그의 시에는 충(忠), 효(孝), 의(義) 등의 유교적 가치를 실천하는 과정에서 ‘직’이 핵심 덕목으로 작용하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 조헌은 의병을 조직하여 직접 전투에 참여함으로써 ‘직’을 개인적 윤리나 이상이 아닌 실천적 대의 행위로 승화시켰다. 이는 조선 사회의 유교적 이상을 국난 위기의 현실 극복으로 연결한 구체적 사례로 평가될 수 있다.
This study explores the philosophical concept of jik (直, rectitude) as reflected in the poetry of Jo Heon (趙憲, 1544-1592), a distinguished scholar and uibyongjang (義兵將, commander of the righteous army) during the mid-Joseon period. Rooted in Confucian principles, Jo Heon epitomized unwavering integrity, dedicating his life to the service of the state and its people. His poetry serves as a literary embodiment of this moral commitment, mirroring the philosophical significance of jik as emphasized in the Lunyu (論語, Analects of Confucius).
During periods of national crisis, Jo Heon not only underscored the ruler’s moral responsibility but also actively embodied the principles of integrity and ethical duty expected of a loyal subject. His poetry serves as a literary testament to this commitment, articulating core Confucian values such as chung (忠, loyalty), hyo (孝, filial piety), and ui (義, righteousness), with jik functioning as the foundational principle that both structured and reinforced these ideals.
By mobilizing a uibyong (righteous army) and directly engaging in battle, Jo Heon transformed jik from a personal ethical principle or abstract ideal into a tangible act of moral and civic duty. His actions represent a definitive example of how Confucian ideals in Joseon society were not merely theoretical constructs but active frameworks for addressing and overcoming national crises.
