1543년 출판부터 1616년 금서목록 판정이 있기까지의 70여년동안 코페르니쿠스를 둘러싼 환경은 어떻게 변하였고, 종교와 과학의 갈등은 어떻게 이어졌는가? 이 연구는 1616년 금서목록에오르게 되는 소위 ‘코페르니쿠스 사건’과 관련하여 코페르니쿠스주의자들에게 책임을 귀속시킬 수밖에 없는 원인을 논의한다. 코페르니쿠스에 대한 교회의 판결은 자유롭고 합리적인 과학의 기풍을 꺾어버린 미신적 종교의 횡포로 평가된다. 이러한 단순한평가는 과학은 선한 연구이고 종교는 악한 통제라는 선악의 구도에 기반해 있다. 과학과 종교의 갈등을 전쟁모델로 보는 이러한입장에서 코페르니쿠스 사건은 과학과 종교 간 전쟁의 전형적인사례가 된다. 그러나 전쟁모델은 사태의 진상을 왜곡하기 쉽다.
이것은 또한 종교는 악 과학은 선이라는 왜곡된 구도를 조장하여갈등의 모든 책임을 종교에 전가하는 경향이 있다. 이 논문은 성서 문자주의와 과학적 실재론을 억지스럽게 관철하고자 한 코페르니쿠스주의자들의 형이상학적 일탈이 코페르니쿠스 사건의 주요 원인들 중 하나라고 주장한다. 코페르니쿠스주의자들의 형이상학이 초래한 갈등은 코페르니쿠스 사건을 합리성 대 비합리성의 충돌로 보기 어렵게 한다. 교회는 코페르니쿠스를 금서목록에올림으로써 씻을 수 없는 과오를 범하였지만, 이 불행한 사건에서 코페르니쿠스주의자들 또한 책임에서 자유로울 수 없다.
How did things related to Copernicus create a conflict between religion and science in the 70 years between the publication in 1543 and the judgment of the Index of Forbidden Books in 1616.
This study purports the Copernicans were responsible for the conflict regarding the so-called Copernican event, which was placed on the Prohibited List in 1616. The church’s ruling on Copernicus is evaluated as a tyranny of superstitious religions that broke the spirit of free and reasonable science in the history of science. This simple assessment is based on the structure that science is good research and religion is evil control. From this point of view, the Copernican event is a typical example of a warfare model in which science and religion are at war. However, this warfare model that analyzes conflict is prone to distorting the truth of the situation. In addition, by promoting a distorted structure that religion is evil and science is good, it tends to pass all responsibility on to religion. This paper tries to show that the metaphysical deviation of the Copernicans, who adhered to biblical literalism and scientific realism, is one of the main causes of the Copernican event. The conflict caused by the Copernican metaphysics makes the Copernican event difficult to see only asirrational church’s oppression of rational science. The church made an historical mistake by placing Copernicus on the forbidden list, but in this unfortunate event, Copernicans cannot be free from responsibility.
