이타주의의 발명: 현대 메타-윤리학의 등장 배경에 관한 지성사적 한 연구
Invention of Altruism: A Reasoned History of the Rise of Modern Meta-ethics
‘이타주의’(altruism)는 프랑스 사회학자 오귀스트 콩트가 만든 신조어로, 영국 식자층에 알려진 것은 19세기 중반이다. 귀납주의적 사회과학의 모델을 옹립하려 했던 전기사상과 달리, 콩트의 후기사상은 ‘인륜교’라는 새로운 도덕을 설파하는 데 집중되었다. 영국 도덕철학계에서 이타주의라는 신조어의 도입은 이 후기사상의 수용 과정과 밀접하게 결부되어 있으며, 사회학과 경제학 사이의 방법론 논쟁과도 연결되어 있다. 사회학과 경제학이라는 두 가지 사회과학 모델의 격돌은 윤리학의 자율성에 대한 새로운 인식의 지적 배경이 되었다. 현대 메타-윤리학의 등장은 19세기 도덕철학자들의 학술적 성과에 힘입었지만, 그것이 학문적 발명으로 자리매김할 수 있었던 것은 사상계의 전반적 지각 변동이 수반되었기 때문이다. 본 논문에서 필자는 ‘이타주의’의 등장과 보급 과정을 통해 메타-윤리학이 등장할 수 있었던 영국 사회과학계의 지각 변동을 기술하고자 한다. 자신이 공리주의자임을 공개적으로 천명한 인물에는 제번스나 에지워스 같은 경제학자도 있었지만, 스펜서와 같은 사회학자도 있었다. 빅토리아 시대에 공리주의는 경제학과 사회학의 방법론적 갈등에 이미 휘말려 있었고, 그 영향으로 도덕 이론의 성격이 강한 윤리학으로 전개되었음을 보게 될 것이다.
A neologism coined by the French sociologist Auguste Comte, ‘altruism’ first became known to British audiences in the mid-19th century. Unlike his early works addressed the inductivist model of social science, Comte’s latter work focused on advocating a new morality called ‘religion of humanity’. The introduction of the neologism of altruism in British moral philosophy is closely linked to the reception of this latter idea, as well as to the methodological debate between sociology and economics. The clash of these two social science models provided the intellectual backdrop for an appreciation of the autonomy of ethics. The emergence of modern meta-ethics owes much to the work of 19th-century moral philosophers, but it was only as an intellectual invention that it was recognized as an intellectual invention. In this paper, I describe the tectonic shift in the British social sciences that allowed meta-ethics to emerge through the emergence and dissemination of altruism. Among those who openly identified themselves as utilitarians were economists such as Jevons and Edgeworth, but also sociologists such as Spencer. We will see that in the Victorian era, utilitarianism was already embroiled in methodological conflicts between economics and sociology, and that it developed into an ethics that was strongly in the nature of a moral theory.
