이단 학설에 대한 위백규의 이론적 비판과 현실적 활용
Theoretical Criticism and Practical Utilizationof Heterodox Doctrines in Wi Baek-gyu’s Thought
본 연구는 학문에 대한 위백규의 관점과 이단을 바라보는 그의 시각을 규명하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 위백규는 조선 후기에 활동한 대표적인 실학자로 유학을 바탕으로 다양한 사상을 수용하며 사회 개혁을 모색한 인물이다. 그는 유학이 인간과 사회를 조화롭게 이끄는 학문임을 강조하며, 예(禮)를 통해 우주 질서를 사회 질서로 구현할 수 있다고 여겼다. 이러한 시각에서 그는 도가와 불교가 이론적인 측면에서 분명한 한계를 가진다고 지적한다. 우선 도가와 불교가 강조하는 무(無)가 유(有)와 조화를 이루지 못한다고 비판하며, 유와 무를 체용(體用) 관계로 이해하는 유학의 관점이 더욱 우수하다고 평가한다. 또한 도가와 불교가 나라는 개념을 부정함으로써 개인의 초월적 경지를 강조하면서도 결국에는 나라는 개념에 얽매인다고 지적하며, 유학이야말로 인간관계와 사회적 역할 속에서 진정한 자아를 완성할 수 있는 학문이라고 주장한다. 하지만 그는 현실적으로 이단이 이미 조선 사회에 깊숙이 관여하기에 이를 무조건적으로 배척할 것이 아니라 적극적으로 활용해야 한다고 주장한다. 특히 그는 불교의 역할에 주목하였는데, 불교는 민심의 안정과 호국적 성격을 모두 갖추고 있기에 이를 적극적으로 운용한다면 국익에 큰 도움이 될 것이라고 생각한다.
This study aims to examine Wi Baek-gyu’s perspective on scholarship and his views on heterodox doctrines. As a leading Silhak scholar of the late Joseon period, Wi Baek-gyu sought social reform by incorporating diverse ideas while maintaining a foundation in Confucianism. He emphasized Confucianism as a discipline that harmonizes individuals and society, asserting that Ye(禮) serves as a means to translate cosmic order into social order. From this standpoint, he criticized Daoism and Buddhism for their theoretical limitations. He pointed out that their emphasis on Mu(無) fails to achieve harmony with Yu(有), and he regarded the Confucian understanding of Che-yong(體用) as superior. Additionally, he argued that while Daoism and Buddhism reject the notion of the self to pursue transcendence, they ultimately remain entangled in the very concept they seek to negate. In contrast, he claimed that Confucianism enables individuals to achieve true self-realization through human relationships and social roles. However, recognizing the deep- rooted presence of heterodox doctrines in Joseon society, he contended that they should not be unconditionally rejected but rather utilized strategically. In particular, he highlighted the role of Buddhism, which, due to its contributions to social stability and national defense, could be effectively employed for the benefit of the state.
