Why Are We Born with a Good Heart?(1): The Issue of Theoretical Justification in Mencius’s Doctrine of the Goodness of Human Nature
본고는 유가(儒家)의 성선설(性善說)이 현대적 윤리 원칙으로서 어떻게 이론적으로 정당화될 수 있는가를 고찰했다. 맹자 성선설에 대한 기존의 비판적 논점—성선설이 ‘자연 본성’을 배제한다는 지적과 ‘자연주의적 오류(naturalistic fallacy)’를 범하고 있다는 지적—을 엄밀히 검토하여, 동서양 본성론 간의 ‘범주적 차이’와 유가 사유 전통의 특수성을 밝혔다.
본고는 『맹자(孟子)』, 『주역(周易)』 등 유가 문헌과 이에 대한 정주학(程朱學)의 해석을 기반으로, 유가 사상에서 ‘자연(自然)’과 ‘선(善)’은 단절된 것이 아니라 연속되어 있으며, ‘자연적 선’으로부터 ‘윤리적 선’의 도출이 가능함을 보였다. 이는 ‘사실-당위’의 간극이라는 서구의 메타윤리학적 문제의식과 달리, 유가의 성선설이 인간의 일상적 경험과 정치⋅윤리적 실천을 포괄하는 종합적 이론으로 작동함을 의미한다. 결론적으로 본고는 맹자의 성선설이 갖는 자연적 근거와 이론적 논증을 바탕으로 유가의 성선설이 현대의 윤리 원칙 및 정치철학에도 유의미한 시사점과 대안적 전망을 제공할 수 있음을 논증하였다.
This paper examines how the Confucian doctrine of the original goodness of human nature(性善說) can be theoretically justified as a modern ethical principle. It critically reviews established objections to Mencius’s theory of the goodness of human nature—specifically, the claims that the theory excludes ‘natural nature’ and falls into the so-called ‘naturalistic fallacy’—and elucidates the categorical differences between Eastern and Western accounts of human nature, as well as the distinctiveness of Confucian thought.
Drawing on primary Confucian texts such as the Mencius(孟子) and the Book of Changes(周易), along with later commentaries in the Cheng-Zhu school(程朱學), this study demonstrates that ‘nature(自然)’ and ‘goodness(善)’ in Confucianism are not separated but are instead regarded as continuous, and that ‘moral goodness’ can be derived from ‘natural goodness’. In contrast to the meta-ethical debates in Western philosophy regarding the is–ought gap, the Confucian doctrine of the original goodness functions as a comprehensive theory encompassing human everyday experience as well as practical and political ethics. The study concludes that, based on its natural foundations and rational argumentation, Mencius’s theory of original goodness can provide meaningful insights and alternative perspectives for contemporary ethical theory and political philosophy.
