이 글은 오킨의 “휴머니스트 정의”안에 함께 자리한 자유주의와 페미니즘을 동시에 변론하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 오킨은 긴장 관계에 있는 두 사상을 포기하지 않기 때문에 양측으로부터 도전을 받을 수 있다. 나는 오킨의 사상이 받는 이 도전들 중 핵심적인 몇몇에 초점을 맞춰 가능한 대응을 마련하고자 한다. 우선, 2절에서는 오킨의 “휴머니스트 정의”에 대한 나의 해석과 설명을 제시할 것이다. 그러고 나서 3절에서는 자유주의자가 오킨에게 제기했거나 제기할 법한 문제제기에 대해 오킨이 했거나 할 법한 대응을 제시할 것이다. 이를 통해 나는 오킨을 단지 변론하는 것이 아니라 오킨의 사상이 그럴듯한 형태의 자유주의가 되기 위한 더 바람직한 방향도 이끌어낼 것이다. 4절에서는 페미니스트가 오킨에게 제기했거나 제기할 법한 문제제기에 대해 오킨이 했거나 할 법한 대응을 제시할 것이다. 이를 통해 나는 지금 우리 사회에서 오킨식의 자유주의적 페미니즘이 구시대적인 단순한 발상으로서 비난받기보다 현시대의 긴급한 사회문제로 떠오른 가족, 돌봄, 노동의 연결 문제를 풀어나갈 생산적인 발상으로서 활용될 가능성이 크다고 결론내린다.
The aim of this paper is to defend both of liberalism and feminism within Okin’s “Humanist Justice”. Okin has been challenged by both sides because she doesn’t give up neither of them. I suggest a possible response, focusing on some challenges that Okin’s ideas might face. First of all, I will present my interpretation and explanation of Okin’s “humanist justice.” And then I will present the response that Okin has or might have to the questions that the liberals have raised or may have raised with Okin. Through this, I will not only defend Okin, but also draw a more desirable direction for Okin’s ideas to become a plausible form of liberalism.
Finally, I will present Okin’s response or possible response to challenges from the feminists. My conclusion is that liberal feminist ideas which are informed by Okin’s ideas is more likely to be used as a promising idea to solve the connected problems between family, care, and labor, which have emerged as an urgent social problem of our society nowadays, rather than criticized as a kind of outdated liberal ideas.
