아리스토텔레스 『정치학』에서 관조의 정치적 의의에 관한 연구
A Study on the Political Significance of Contemplation in Aristotle’s Politics
본 논문은 아리스토텔레스의 정치학에서 제시되는 이상적인 폴리스에서의 관조(theōria)가 가지는 정치적 의미가 무엇인지 탐구하고자 한다. 아리스토텔레스가 설명하는 관조는 다른 종류의 활동들과 달라 그 자체로 목적이 된다는 점에서 지극히 개인적이고 비-정치적으로 여겨질 수 있다. 하지만, 아리스토텔레스는 이상적인 폴리스를 다루는 정치학 7권에서, 시민의 행복은 여가에 있으며, 이 여가에 걸맞는 활동은 관조임을 일관되게 제시할 뿐만 아니라, 폴리스에서 관조가 최선의 활동으로 여겨지고 목적으로서 세워질 때, 관조와 대비되는 실천적, 정치적 영역 또한 건강하게 유지될 수 있음을 주장한다. 이것은 관조가 폴리스라는 공동체의 맥락에서 정치적 의미를 획득하게 됨을 보여준다. 게다가, 관조가 폴리스에서 최선의 활동으로 여겨지기 위해서는 비-철학자 시민들의 인정이 필수적이며, 비-철학자 시민들이 관조를 인정하기 위해서는 이들이 관조를 해봄으로써 관조의 가치를 경험하고 인식해야 한다. 이것은 관조가 철학자 시민뿐만 아니라 비-철학자 시민에게도 삶의 방식으로서 여겨져야 함을 함축한다. 아리스토텔레스는 윤리학적 저작에서 신적이고 사적으로 그리던 관조를 정치학에서는 시민의 활동으로, 시민적 관조(civic contemplation)로 그리고 있는 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the political significance of contemplation(theōria) in the ideal polis that Aristotle presents in his Politics. Since contemplation Aristotle has in mind is an end in itself in contrast to all other kinds of activity, contemplation seems personal and non-political. Yet in Book Ⅶ of the Politics, where he treats the ideal polis, Aristotle consistently argues that the happiness of citizens lies in leisure, that the activity befitting leisure is contemplation, and that when contemplation is acknowledged within the polis as the best activity and installed as its goal, the practical and political spheres that stand in contrast to contemplation can likewise keep healthy. This shows that contemplation acquires political meaning in the communal context of the polis. Moreover, for contemplation to be acknowledged as the best activity in the polis, it must be recognized by non-philosopher citizens; and for them to recognize it, they must themselves engage in contemplation and thereby experience and grasp its value. This implies that contemplation must be embaced as a way of life not only by philosopher-citizens but also non-philosopher citizens. In other words, while Aristotle’s ethical writings depict contemplation as divine, private, and non-political, the Politics portrays it as a civic activity―civic contemplation.
