순자 철학에서 ‘배려’로서 인(仁)

본 논문은 순자 철학에서 인(仁)의 의미가 무엇인지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 인(仁)을 ‘자기 배려’, ‘타자 배려’, ‘사회정치적 배려’로 구분하여 논의를 전개하였다. 먼저, ‘자기 배려’로서 인(仁)은 인간이 자신의 타고난 이기적 본성을 변화시키는 새로운 자기 형성의 과정이다. ‘자기 배려’로서 인(仁)은 자기 형성의 과정으로서 인간이 나르시스적 자기애에서 벗어나 타자를 배려하는 인간으로 변모해 가는 것이다. 다음으로, ‘타자 배려’로서 인(仁)은 예(禮)와 ‘공경’에 근거한 타자에 대한 보편적이고 상호적인 관계의 사랑이다. ‘타자 배려’로서 인(仁)은 감정적 사랑[愛]이 지닌 편협성과 폭력성을 예(禮)와 ‘공경’을 통해 극복하고 타자에 대한 보편적이고 상호관계적 사랑을 실천하는 것이다. 끝으로, ‘사회정치적 배려’로서 인(仁)은 개인적 차원을 넘어 사회정치적 차원으로 확장하여 인(仁)을 실천하는 것이다. 인(仁)의 사회정치적 실천은 사회의 구성원들이 ‘자기 배려’와 ‘타자 배려’를 할 수 있게 돕는 것이다. 이러한 인(仁)의 사랑이 사회정치적 차원에서 잘 실현될 때 사회 구성원들이 각자의 직분에 충실하며 조화롭게 살 수 있는 공동체가 된다.
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the meaning of the concept of humanity in Xunzi philosophy. To this end, in this paper, a discussion was conducted by dividing humanity into ‘self-care’, ‘care for others’, and ‘social and political care’. First, humanity as ‘self-care’ is when humans change their natural selfish nature. Humanity as ‘self-care’ is a new process of self-formation in which humans are transforming from a human of narcissistic self-love to a caring human being who can care for others. Next, humanity as ‘care for others’, is the love of a universal and mutual relationship with others based on ‘respect for others’. The love for others based on ‘respect’ through courtesy is ‘care for others’, which is humanity. This is not biased and violent love, but a love of universal and mutual relationships. Finally, humanity as ‘social and political care’, humanity is to practice humanity by expanding beyond the individual level to the socio-political level. The socio-political practice of humanity is to help members of society to do ‘self-care’ and ‘care for others’. When the love of humanity is well realized at the socio-political level, it becomes a community where members of society can live in harmony with their own duties.
