속물성을 넘어서: 사회성 동기와 비평 공동체
Beyond Snobbery: Drive towards Sociality and Aesthetic Criticism Community
미적 실천에 개입하는 사회적 동기는 주로 속물성의 관점에서 부정적으로 분석되어 왔다. 본고는 이러한 속물성 논의의 한계를 넘어, 주로 대중적인 작품을 통해 타인과 연결되려 하는 미적 규범 추종자들(aesthetic normies)의 모습과 그 저변에 있는 사회성 동기(drive towards sociality)에 주목한다. 사회성 동기는 규범 추종이라는 현상 속에서 종종 미적 경험을 제한하는 문제로 이어지기도 하지만, 본질적으로 타인과 연결되고자 하는 동기인 만큼 그 자체로 부정적인 것은 아니다. 이 글은 이러한 사회성 동기가 비평과 미적 공동체를 통해 재정향될 때 오히려 더 풍부한 미적 경험과 깊은 사회적 연결을 가능하게 할 수 있는 긍정적 잠재력을 지니고 있음을 보이고자 한다.
This study reframes current debates on the social motives that shape aesthetic practice, moving beyond the conventional focus on snobbery. Focusing on the aesthetic normies’ tendency to seek connection primarily through mainstream cultural works, it examines the phenomenon’s underlying drive towards sociality. While norm-following can narrow the range and depth of aesthetic experience, the paper argues that this social drive is not inherently negative. Through detailed conceptual analysis illustrated with contemporary examples, it demonstrates that, when positively reoriented by informed criticism and participation in aesthetic communities, the same drive can foster richer aesthetic engagement for individuals and collectives alike, yielding deeper, more authentic social relations.
