Benjamin’s Theory of Technology in Times of Crisis: In Relation to Art

This paper examines Walter Benjamin’s discourse on the crisis of technocracy through his essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Benjamin accepts the contemporary discourse on the crisis of technological domination while proposing strategies to overcome it. Similar to the technological philosophical discussions of his time, Benjamin distinguishes between the essence and the function of technology, yet argues that the function cannot be derived from its essence. This is because he regards technology not as an autonomous domain but as one dependent on the political sphere; the function of technology changes according to how politics utilizes it. Benjamin divides technology into first and second technology, defining the essence of modern technology as the latter. Second technology is characterized by the decline of aura and leads to human self-alienation. According to Benjamin, the technology that alienates the self ultimately leads to automation, and self-alienation is eventually overcome, resulting in the liberation of labor. Film, while having self-alienation as its essential feature, in certain modes of use helps adapt our perception to technology. Film familiarizes us with the phenomenon of self-alienation. However, the mode of use most consistent with the essential properties of film is communist cinema. Through film, humans not only become accustomed to self-alienation but also practice escaping from it. By objectifying their collectively alienated condition, humans avoid sinking into self-alienation itself and instead envision future technological development and liberation of labor. Of course, Benjamin’s discussion of technology has limitations in presenting concrete technologies and forms of labor, which can be further elaborated through Bernard Stiegler’s arguments.
