매체와 감각의 재편 2: 구술과 필사 매체를 중심으로
Media and Reshaping of Human Senses: Focusing on Oral and Script Media
‘매체는 인간의 확장’은 매체 철학의 출발점이다. 매체가 인간의 확장을 촉진하는 것은 매체의 내용이 아니라 형식이다. 새로운 매체의 등장은 이전까지의 감각체계에 균열을 불러오고 감각을 재편한다. 이뿐만 아니라 새로운 매체의 등장은 세계관과 생활세계의 변화로 이어진다. 이것에 대한 가장 적절한 예시는 전기매체일 것이다. TV는 활자 문화가 추방한 청각과 구술성의 가치를 복권했고, 지구적 관점이라는 새로운 가치를 불러왔다. 본 논문은 구술에서 필사 매체로 전환되는 시기 감각의 재편과 그것으로 초래되는 세계관과 사회변동을 추적한다. 이 목표를 달성하기 위해 우리는 월터 J. 옹(Walter J. Ong)의 『구술문화와 문자문화 Orality and Literacy』를 길라잡이로 택할 것이다. 첫째, 옹에 앞서 영화와 전기를 통해 매체와 감각의 재편을 연구한 발터 벤야민(Walter Benjamin)과 마셜 매클루언(Marshall McLuhan)의 이론을 살펴볼 것이다. 둘째, 옹의 구술성 개념을 중심으로 구술과 구술문화의 감각체계의 특징을 검토할 것이다. 셋째, 알파벳의 등장과 문자문화의 등장으로 초래된 감각의 재편을 주로 필사문화를 중심으로 상론할 것이다. 넷째, 전기시대와 이차적 구술성(Secondary Orality)에 대한 옹의 주장의 핵심이 무엇인지 따져 볼 것이다. 마지막으로 옹의 매체 이론에 대한 비판적 평가를 할 것이다.
That ‘Media is an extension of man’ serves foundation of media philosophy. The form of a medium, rather than its content, drives the extension of human capabilities. The emergence of a new medium causes a crack in the previous sensory systems, reshaping our perceptions, worldviews, and lived experiences. Television, an electric medium, exemplifies this phenomenon by reviving the values of hearing and orality that print culture had marginalized, while simultaneously introducing a global perspective. This paper traces the reshaping of the senses during the transition from oral to script media and the resulting shifts in worldview and social structures. To achieve this goal, we will use Walter J. Ong’s Orality and Literacyas a guide. First, I will examine the theories of Walter Benjamin and Marshall McLuhan, who studied the reconfiguration of media and sensory perception through film and electricity. Second, I will analyze the characteristics of oral culture’s sensory system, focusing on Ong’s concept of orality. Third, I will discuss the reconfiguration of sensory perception brought about by the emergence of the alphabet and written culture, primarily emphasizing manuscript culture. Fourth, I will explore the core arguments of Ong regarding the electric age and secondary orality. Lastly, I will provide a critical assessment of Ong’s media theory.
