Rosa Luxemburg’s Spontaneity—The Mutually Organic Causality of Idee and Praxis

Rosa Luxemburg’s spontaneity implies the practical necessity for the working class to produce itself as a universal and specific being. The working class itself, as a universal and specific being, is a thing-in-itself. This is because the working class cannot be defined by capital. Therefore, the working class must be an idee in itself, and at the same time, it is the idee of socialism itself. Furthermore, this idee must be defined (produced) by the worker himself, and the worker inevitably has the duty or obligation to produce himself as the working class as socialism itself, in accordance with this defined idee. Praxis as a imperative that must be produced is in an inseparable, mutually organic causal relationship with socialist idee. Furthermore, this praxis as an imperative becomes a struggle to transcend capitalism. This struggle embodies creativity by harboring the universal and the necessity that go beyond the individual, the general, and probability (contingency). Moreover, this creativity is directly linked to revolution. This struggle, encompassing creativity and revolution, manifests as a mass strike as a sort of categorical imperative. The conclusion of a mass strike is not revolution. Revolution is a prerequisite for a mass strike. However, without a mass strike, a revolution cannot be accomplished. Mass strikes and revolution also have a mutually organic causal relationship. Rosa Luxemburg observes this in the Russian Revolution. Through mass strikes, the working class must fulfill its duty to produce the idee of socialism—which is the working class itself—and to realize that idee. Therefore, for the working class, the production of the idee and its realization are in a mutually organic causal relationship at the level of praxis (imperative) that they must necessarily be done. And the Social Democratic Party and trade unions emerge as the results of this praxis. However, on the surface, it appears that the Social Democratic Party is separated into the production of the idee on one hand, and the trade union into the realization of this idee on the other. Nevertheless, in terms of the praxis of the working class, the party and the trade unions are in a mutually organic causal relationship. Rosa Luxemburg’s spontaneity of the working class leaves us with the task of surveying the entire system of Marx’s practical materialism and dialectics, and re-examining Marx’s key concepts, through the mutually organic causal relationships inherent in the praxis of the working class.
