라이헨바흐의 ‘확률적 실재론’에 대하여 – 카르납, 파이글의 ‘실용적 실재론’과 어떤 점에서 다른가? –
On Reichenbach’s “Probabilistic Realism” – In what Respects Does it Differ from Carnap’s and Feigl’s “Pragmatic Realism”? –
‘과학적 실재론’의 문제는 현대 과학철학의 전통적이고 대표적인 논의 주제이다. 근래에 과학철학자들은 20세기 전반기에 과학철학을 시작한 ‘논리경험주의(Logical Empiricism)’의 전통 내에서 이루어진 과학적 실재론에 관한 논의를 재평가하고 있으며, 이러한 재평가에서 등장하는 주요한 세 인물은 한스 라이헨바흐(Hans Reichenbach), 루돌프 카르납(Rudolf Carnap), 헤르베르트 파이글(Herbert Feigle)이다. 나는 본 논문에서 이 세 인물 모두 일종의 ‘실재론’을 주장하는 것으로 평가되고 있다는 점에 주목한다. 카르납은 ‘실용적 실재론’, 파이글은 ‘의미론적 실재론’, 라이헨바흐는 ‘확률적 실재론’을 표방한다는 것이다. 나는 카르납의 ‘실용적 실재론’은 제대로 된 실재론이라 할 수 없는 ‘유사 실재론(pseudo-realim)’이며, 파이글의 ‘의미론적 실재론’ 역시 과도하게 강한 ‘사실적 지칭(factual reference)’ 개념을 사용함으로써 결과적으로는 카르납과 유사한 입장으로 퇴행함을 보인다. 마지막으로 나는 라이헨바흐의 ‘확률적 실재론’은 확률 개념을 상당히 유연하게 사용하는 약한 실재론이기 때문에 세계에 객관적으로 존재하는 대상들을 지칭하는 데 성공함을 주장한다. 결론적으로, 논리경험주의자 카르납, 파이글, 라이헨바흐 중 적절한 실재론적 입장을 표방한 사람은 라이헨바흐이며, 카르납과 파이글의 입장을 과학적 실재론이라 보기는 어렵다.
The problem of scientific realism is a classic and representative topic in contemporary philosophy of science. Recently, philosophers of science have re-evaluated debates on scientific realism carried out within the tradition of Logical Empiricism that inaugurated philosophy of science in the first half of the twentieth century. Three central figures in this reappraisal are Hans Reichenbach, Rudolf Carnap, and Herbert Feigl. I begin by noting that all three have been assessed as advocating some form of “realism”: Carnap a pragmatic realism, Feigl a semantic realism, and Reichenbach a probabilistic realism. I argue that Carnap’s “pragmatic realism” is not a genuine realism but a kind of pseudo-realism, and that Feigl’s “semantic realism,” by relying on an overly strong notion of factual reference, ultimately regresses toward a position similar to Carnap’s. By contrast, I contend that Reichenbach’s “probabilistic realism,” a modest form of realism that deploys the concept of probability with considerable flexibility, succeeds in referring to objects that exist objectively in the world. In conclusion, among the logical empiricists Carnap, Feigl, and Reichenbach, it is Reichenbach who articulates a defensible realist stance; Carnap’s and Feigl’s views are, on balance, difficult to classify as genuine scientific realism.
