듀이의 민주주의와 의사소통의 윤리
Dewey’s Democracy and the Ethics of Communication
민주주의의 위기를 초래한 공론장의 왜곡과 붕괴는 합리적 의사소통의 불가능성을 의미한다. 의사소통 행위이론과 의사소통적 권력이론의 정초를 통해서 이러한 문제를 극복하려고 한 하버마스의 노력은 실질적인 성과를 거두지 못했다. 근본적으로 이론의 현실적 실천력을 보장하지 못했기 때문이다. 이러한 하버마스의 실패를 해결할 수 있는 가능한 방도를 듀이의 의사소통의 철학에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 공공 철학의 창안자라고 부를 수도 있는 듀이의 민주주의론의 핵심에는 하버마스가 정립했던 의사소통의 윤리가 배태되어 있다. 하버마스의 의사소통 행위이론이 현실적 실천력을 갖는데 역부족이었다면, 그것은 이미 정치적 공론장이 왜곡되어 있으며, 그 원인에 대한 문제의식으로부터 출발하지 않았기 때문이다. 반면에 현대의 의사소통 이론가들에 앞서 의사소통의 중요성에 주목했던 듀이는 의사소통을 삶의 문제를 해결하는 절차로 이해한다. 듀이는 처음부터 문제 해결을 위한 현실적 실천력을 갖는 의사소통에 주목한 것이다. 이것이 사회적 실천이 가능한 의사소통의 윤리를 듀이의 철학으로부터 재구성해 보려고 시도하는 이유이다.
The distortion and collapse of the public sphere, which have led to the crisis of democracy, signify the impossibility of rational communication. Habermas attempted to overcome this problem through the establishment of the theory of communicative action and the theory of communicative power. However, these efforts did not achieve substantial results, fundamentally because his theory failed to guarantee practical applicability in reality. A possible solution to this shortcoming in Habermas’s thought can be found in John Dewey’s philosophy of communication. At the core of Dewey’s theory of democracy—Dewey could even be called the founder of public philosophy—lies an ethical vision of communication similar to that established by Habermas. If Habermas’s theory of communicative action proved insufficient in securing practical applicability, it was because he did not begin from an awareness of the already distorted nature of the political public sphere and its causes. In contrast, long before contemporary communication theorists, Dewey recognized the importance of communication and understood it as a procedure for solving the problems of life. From the outset, Dewey focused on communication that possessed practical power for problem-solving. This is the reason for the attempt to reconstruct a communication ethic capable of social practice based on Dewey’s philosophy.
