동아시아유학과 비판유학: 논쟁, 한계, 그리고 새로운 가능성
East Asian Confucianism and Critical Confucianism: Debates, Limitations and New Horizons
본 논문은 대만 학계를 중심으로 형성된 동아시아유학 담론의 전개 과정과 그 한계를 비판적으로 고찰하였다. 먼저 유가 경전에 대한 철학적 접근이 점차 연구 영역을 넓혀가는 흐름을 살피고, 그 속에서 ‘동아시아’라는 개념이 정치･이데올로기적 함의를 지닌다는 문제 제기를 검토하였다. 일본의 고야스 노부쿠니는 동아시아유학이 중화문명 중심의 질서를 강화하며 반복적인 모방 구조를 낳는다고 지적하였으나, 그가 제안하는 ‘보편성 해체를 통한 다양성 구현’은 유학 자체의 이념적 기반까지 제거할 위험이 있었다. 이에 대한 대응으로 황준걸은 ‘유학공동체’ 개념을 통해 보편성과 다양성의 병존을 모색하고, 경전 해석학의 창조적 전환 가능성을 부각시켰다. 그러나 주자학과 양명학에 대한 홍콩･대만 당대신유가의 특정한 해석 속에서 전개되는 논의는 퇴계학의 사례에서 보듯 의도치 않게 위계적 질서를 재생산할 가능성을 여전히 내포한다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위한 대안으로 본고는 ‘비판유학’의 방법론을 제시한다. 이는 전통 해석 틀의 권위를 절대화하지 않고, 고전의 의미를 현재의 경험과 연계하여 재해석하는 방식을 핵심으로 한다. 이를 통해 이론 중심의 추상적 유학 연구를 넘어, 현대인의 구체적 삶과 연결되는 실천적 의미를 부여하고, 유학 고유의 역동성과 다양성을 활성화하고자 한다.
This paper critically examines the evolution of the East Asian Confucianism discourse within the Taiwanese academic sphere, focusing on its conceptual development and inherent limitations. While philosophical reinterpretations of the Confucian classics have expanded the scope of inquiry, critics such as Nobukuni Koyasu argue that the framework reinforces Sino-centric hierarchies and perpetuates imitative structures. His call to dismantle universality in favor of diversity, however, risks erasing the foundational ideals of Confucianism. In contrast, Huang Junjie’s notion of a “Confucian community” seeks a balance between universality and diversity and promotes creative transformations in classical hermeneutics, yet still risks reproducing hierarchical orders, as seen in the Toegye studies shaped by contemporary Neo-Confucian school interpretations of Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming. To overcome these challenges, the study proposes “Critical Confucianism,” an approach that avoids the absolutization of inherited interpretive frameworks and reinterprets the classics through the lens of present experience. This method moves beyond abstract theorization, engages with the lived realities of the present, and revitalizes the inherent dynamism and diversity of Confucian thought.
