초록
갈릴레이 사건은 종교 갈등의 가장 유명한 경우로서, ‘합리적 과학과 미신적 종교의 갈등’이라는 소위 ‘전쟁모델’로 단순화되었다.
이런 단순화된 구도는 현대에서도 종교와 과학 간의 갈등을 보는관점을 결정하고 있다. 그러나 근세 갈릴레이 사건에서 현대 무신론에 이르는 종교 갈등을 합리성과 미신 사이의 전쟁으로 보는 것은 현상을 본질로 오해하는 것이다. 종교와 과학 간 갈등의 과거와현재를 성찰하고 미래를 올바로 논의하기 위해서는 이런 단순화된 관점을 지양해야 한다. 이 논문은 종교 갈등의 과거로서 갈릴레이 사건과 현재로서 도킨스의 무신론에서 과학적 실재론에 기반한문자주의 성서해석, 과학적 증거의 엄밀성이 갈등의 원인이 된다는 것을 논의한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 종교와 과학의 갈등은 합리성과 미신 간의 전쟁모델로 일반화될 수 없음을 논변한다.
Galileo Galilei and his condemnation by the Catholic Church, so called the ‘Galilei Affair’, is taken as the typical conflict between science and the church. The affair has been generally simplified as an warfare between rational science and superstitious religion. The warfare model is still influential in the contemporary understandings of the relationship between science and religion.
Richard Dawkins takes the real nature of conflict between science and religion as the real war between rationalism and superstition. I argue that Galilei’s theism and Dawkins’s atheism are based on biblical literalism and scientific realism in common. And scientific evidence and theological sloppiness in their arguments cause the real conflict. Therefore, the conflict can not be taken as the war between rational science and superstitious religion.
